Did you know that it is never revealed what State Springfield, the Simpsons' hometown is in? If you watch the show you probably have noticed this. In one episode they go out into the ocean from a dock in Springfield. In the movie, Flanders and Bart are hiking and he takes Bart to a point where you can see four different states, none of which are actually anywhere near close to each other.
When the Simpsons first started, I assumed that they were in Springfield Illinois because that was the only Springfield I knew of for years. Then I found out Missouri has one a few years later. Now I know that a bunch of states have a Springfield. Wonder which one the producers have in mind as being the home of the Simpsons'?

it may be possible that they didn't model the town after a "Springfield" but just gave it that name.
I think, the creators did that on purpose because they want springfield to remain an "imaginary" place with no particular locale in mind. Hence, the re-arrangement of states: They do not want to directly relate springfield to a particular town in a particular state.
I guess you can say that they wanted it to be the "every town" or typical town or no town at all in America. :D

That sounds about right! It is always fun to speculate though :)
