I live in a high rise building, and I really want a dog. The problem is that I live on the 6th floor, and have to take an elevator to get outside. And there is little grass outside, just the concrete jungle of the city. Any idea as to what kind of dog I should get. Would it be fair for me to have a dog in an apartment?

The only reason I would say it would be unfair to the dog, is if you didnt have time for it. Being couped up in an apartment all day or worse a cage all day, alone, is just too cruel. I've seen so many people do that and then get angry w/ the dog for chewing things up or going potty in the house etc..As far as not having easy access to the outside, I wouldnt worry to much. If you get a small dog you could always paper train it or even litter box train it. The important thing is to be consistent and to reward the dog when it does a good job. Look at me, I'm sayin this like I'm an expert LOL I had a mini doxie a few years ago that was a doll! He was a fiesty puppy but seemed to learn very quickly! Good luck in your dog search!

I don't see why not, lots of people do! You will probably want a small breed, since they can be easily paper or litter box trained. Crate training is good for dogs who are left alone, if it is done properly. Dogs sleep most of the day anyway, if they are content. The crate should be their "den," a place where they feel safe and secure, and never used for punishment. And always let them out as soon as you get home.

Only if the apartment building rules allow it; maybe you could get a small dog. Small dogs won't need much exercise, and they can be trained to use a litter box. :}

I would first ask what kind of pets are allowed in your building. Then I'd probably look into something small that perhaps you could litter train? Or try to find a dog park near by so the dog can get out and stretch.
