Pink Floyd: best with Barrett or after Barrett?

This is one I've got a problem with. Although I prefer the music of Pink Floyd in the Barrett period, I think that Pink Floyd became more of a group after Barrett. Syd Barrett had a vibrant personality which was standing out, and I think that it would have been a matter of time before he left Pink Floyd for a solo career anyway.
Of course, it is impossible to know what would have happened. I still think though that Pink Floyd were more bonded and in a way sounded more diverse after Syd Barrett left.
Any thoughts on that?

I personally prefer them when he left, but at the same time without the Syd Barrett time period there would be no Pink Floyd. I just prefer them without him because of how big a fan I am of Gilmour's playing. I'm not saying I dislike Syd or anything but I just prefer Gilmour especially because of his melodic guitarwork.

he may have been great with p.f. when they were first starting, but i think they got better after he had to go.
(do not want to offend anyone, am being neutral although it is my humble opinion)
