I posted here before about my dog being seriously ill from infection and having a swollen face. He has just spent 2 days in hospital and nearly died. When he was walking on Tuesday afternoon my partner says a dog snapped at his face and he growled back but there was no sign of a bite. Well it seems that the dog bit him on the eye and its tooth pierced the eye. The first sign we had that something was wrong was when he became miserable and clingy and then the next day he would not eat. His eye swelled up over night while we were asleep and we rushed him to hospital on Thursday morning. By this time the infection was dangerous. We did not realise how ill he was. There was never any sign of a wound. No sign of blood or anything like that which would have alerted us. This infection spread fast and he nearly lost his third eyelid. He is now on the mend though still very ill. His eye looked fine on Wednesday and my partner saw him at 3am Thursday morning and there was no swelling then. I saw it about 4 hours later when I got up for breakfast. By then the infection was serious and he spent 2 days in hospital on an antibiotic drip. So be careful of other dogs that snap near yours. You just do not know what can happen. It was so fast.

It cannot have been a bite there must have been something else wrong with the dog. If there was a bite there would have been a wound and bleeding as dogs have sharp canine teeth.

You are quite right. It turned out to be an infection in his head. He had an abscess that no one knew was there until it burst. He was in hospital for nearly a week. I just hope it never happens again.
