Why is it that the Black Lesbian Community in Southern States is so underground

I moved from Chicago to Tennessee three years ago, where the Black Lesbian community is large and visable. I have visted other major cities in the North and South; and have found the more South you go the harder it is to find the Black Lesbian Community. Except for Atlanta, it is undergound. I could be wrong...What do you say?
