You must first connect to the Internet (you need a broadband Internet connection), ensure that your computer has a sound card is of at least sixteen bits and allows recording, use compatible speakers and a microphone, buy and install Internet telephony software on your computer (and make sure it is compatible with the software that the people you call are using), keep the people you are calling informed about the time you'll be online and follow the instructions on your Internet telephony software to make calls. or use SKYPE ..you can make Pc-to-Pc calls allover the world for free. For a small fee you can call from your PC to any mobile or phone abroad using the same Skype programme.

That does sound interesting. I heard about SKYPE, but I do not have my computer set up for telephony service. I am not into talking, worked as a telemarketer and got so many nasty replies I try to avoid using the telephone or the computer as a telephone as much as possible. Besides do you not have to pay for the SKYPE software and hardware first?

The kind of soundcard you should really look for is a Full Duplex card. This means, in effect, that it has two channels one of which handles Sound In and one which handles Sound Out. Most computers these days come with a suitable sound card. Besides using speakers (or headphones) and a microphone connected to the sound card itself, you can also get a handset (like a normal phone) which connects to a USB port. This uses a different channel to your speakers, so (in certain circumstances) it is possible to have music playing on your PC while you make a phone call. Of course, if you are streaming music from a website, you will be using up bandwidth on your Internet connection, so either the music or the phone call is likely to be 'choppy' and unworkable. It is a good idea, when making a VoIP call, to not have anything else running (such as a download, for example) when you are making a call. Skype is, of course, the VoIP provider that one hears most about. It is free to install and to use if your correspondent is also using it but if you make PC-to-Phone calls, there are charges. In many cases the charges are far lower than they would be if you made the calls from your landline (and certainly a GREAT deal cheaper than from a mobile!). There are several other alternative services besides Skype, however. You can now make PC-to-PC calls through Yahoo and MSN Messenger and these are just as good quality as Skype. Skype uses a proprietary technology whereas most others use a generic (free) technology. This means that if you want add-ons (such as the ability to record calls) you will have to pay for these if you use Skype. There are two companies which I can personally recommend (besides Yahoo and MSN) offering similar services to Skype. * Their PC-to-Phone call rates are somewhat cheaper than Skype and, in some cases, free (with certain restrictions). I can make free calls from my PC in the UK to any US phone with VoipBuster, for example. * They also offer services whereby, for a small set-up charge, someone in another country can call a local number and connect to your phone or PC. Often calling a local number is free, so their call from a regular phone can be free. The two that I recommend investigating (they may not be available in all countries) are: Voip Buster: http://www.voipbuster.com/en/index.html Gizmo: http://www.gizmoproject.com/index.php There are several others which I haven't tried. The above two, however, I have always found very suitable for my use.
