Can Office 2007 files be viewed by people using Office 2003?

I am doing some work in Office 2007 and plan to email these files to friends. Are they able to read the work that I have done if they are not using office 2007

If you save the document with the extension .docx they won't be able to open it, but if save it as .doc they can open it.

you can go like this : save as -save type choose exel 2000-2003work sheet.
