Now that I've given in to the inevitable

Well, about 2 years ago, I gave up and started wearing reading glasses. I put it off as LONG as I could, but I just couldn't see anymore. Now, it seems that I'm really dependent on the darn things. I can't read anything but the large print type books without them, I almost need a magnifying glass to see the tiny ingrediants on food, I can't do my crafts... I am always buying another pair it seems. I need one pair here, another there, one carried with me, one in the car.... So, while I've always kind of needed distance glasses, for the mid to near distance - like talking to a person, or reading, it wasn't necessary. I still can fuction quite well for most things between arm's length and across the room, its the really close and the driving distances I need aid with. So, you poor people that need corrective lenses to find your glasses in the morning (yes, I know a few of you) I'm not really talking to you, I'm talking to those of us who have been fortunate enough most our lives to not need glasses full time, are you finding you are needing reading glasses in your late 40's/50's?

I'm not worried about looking nerdy, I'm proud to be a SF/F geek, but wearing glasses give me a headache because of my shallow sinuses. Since I need distance glasses for driving, that and movies were the only time I wore them. Its the reading/crafting that have lead me to the reading glasses.

I have always needed glasses for most of my life. But, my eyesight isn't as bad as it used to be since my health and diet have improved. However, that doesn't mean that I'm not going to need reading glasses in the next few years. Most people will need them, sooner or later. Very few people go through an entire long life never having to use them. Some might refuse to use them and others might only have a slight problem, but just about everyone will need them if they live a long time.

I was always something of an anomoly in Science fiction fandom, I could see WITHOUT my glasses. I was a little near sighted in both eyes, but mostly got on just fine without any correction. UNTIL NOW!

My husband uses reading glasses but he really needs his eyes checked and needs to get real glasses for his vision also. We don't have insurance so he is afraid of the bill if he goes to get his eyes checked out. My husband can see far but not near unless it is in huge print. He is 51 now and has fairly good vision most of the time but there are times when he gets so frustrated when trying to read something in small print. I, on the other hand, have really good vision for my age, thank God. I do not have to wear glasses yet. I'm sure I will sooner or later though. I will be 37 this year and I am no spring chicken anymore, LOL.

Yes. I think so too. I couldn't have picked a better man for myself and my daughter. We get along pretty good and we help each other get through life.

As someone older than your husband, you're a pup. Heck, your younger than both my BABY sister and my roommate! Dern it, you're young enough to be my DAUGHTER for goodness sake!

Good Morning ElicBxn,.....I hate getting old, lol! When I was in my late 30's I use to work for a lady that poured porcelain animals and tiny Christmas houses. I did the detailing work on the animals, such as eyes, fur, etc. I loved it, but it actually ruined my eyesight. I had to hold the animals on my chest to carve them out and detail them, so it was very close-up work. That completely messed up my eyes and I had perfect sight up until then. Now I for sure have to wear glasses for close reading, such as this. I've been wearing them now for 20 years and still find it a pain in the a$$, lol! I'll never grow old gracefully.

What a facinating job! That sounds so cool! Wish I could find a cool job like that! Since my eyes are now shot, and the jewelry making seems to have finished them off, I would LOVE to have something like that! And no, I'm not growing old gracefully. You know the saying, growing old isn't an option, growing up is. And I WON'T, as Peter Pan says, grow up!

Yes, it was a fun job and I loved to see my work when it was finished, from the little fur in their ears to the little fur on their feet. It was fun I must say. I'm with you, I will never grow old, my body might, but the mind won't let me, haha.

I feel your pain! I've never worn glasses before and now I need them to read. I have about 8 pair. I leave them all over the house and whenever I need a pair, I can never find them. All 8 pairs are usually in one spot (just like the cordless phones in my house). I started wearing them on top of my head, so whenever I need to read something, I pat the top of my head to make sure they're there and guess what...they're in the pile with the other 7 pair of glasses and not on top of my head. In addition to needing the help of glasses, I found that my memory is...shall we say, not what it used to be. To compensate for my hide and seek memory, I bought a small digital voice recorder and hang it around my neck. I call it my brain. So now, I've got a brain around my neck and my eyes on top of my head. What next? I'm not complaining because the alternative isn't so nice.

LOL!!! I think your my new best friend!!! I have about 8 pairs, don't have voice recorder, frankly nothing I'm thinking is so important! And when it is I write it down - in large print so I can read it! I too often wear a pair on top of my head.... I even have a pair of presciption glasses that are for reading tiny print in the middle distance (from when I did data entry.)

I am having the same problems, but I am a little younger. I find that if you go to the dollar store and get about 5 and put them all over the house, you have them when you need them. Also, buying the pricey ones are worthless; they still get scratched and lost.

I like the hard cases and the small sizes. They are less uncomfortable for me. They do get scratched, but if you keep them in the case, it happens less.

Needing glasses? I have actually seriously considered those ghastly things to keep them hanging around my neck! It isn't so bad in winter, I keep them in my coat pocket so they're usually accessible, wherever I might be. Warm weather is when I start thinking about multiple pairs. This spring, I'll probably have to move to the next number. I'll tell ya, this aging thing, it's not for sissies! =o)

No, getting old isn't for sissies. I know what you mean by keeping them in pockets, I like the ones in the hard cases. I do have them all over.

I know just what you mean. I have always needed glasses for close up but never wore them much. My eyes weren't that bad. Now that I'm older, they are and I can't afford the prescription so I am doing the reading glasses thing. If I forget them, I am as good as blind. Its awful. Fortunatly, my long distance sight is still pretty good...I pass the driving test.

I have been pretty lucky, it seems that most "true fans" in science fiction fandom can't see the end of their noses.

I needed reading glasses when I turned 40. Before that I kept noticing things weren't as clear as they used to be and hated it. I can't see things close up without my glasses so I wear them when I read, eat or cross stitching otherwise, I'd be giving myself a headache, making a mess on my plate and my cross stitching would be all over the fabric. Now knowing what my prescription is, I go to the dollar general store and get a few of them and put them in places that I know I'll use them most. They're very cheap at the dollar general so it won't break anybody's budget and they have all kinds of designs to choose from.

I can see well enough to eat, heck, I barely look at the plate anyway - I'm either reading the computer screen or a book. But I can't see the aida cloths squares or the seed beads or the words when I read so I need them for that.
