Joshua A. Norton was a celebrated citizen of San Francisco who in 1859 proclaimed himself Emperor of the United States. Although he had no real political power, he was treated deferentially in San Francisco, and the currency he issued in his name was honored in the establishments he frequented. Though he was considered insane, or at least highly eccentric, the citizens of San Francisco celebrated his presence, his humor, and his deeds.

On this day January 8th, 1880 in San Francisco, Joshua A. Norton, Emperor of the United States & Protector of Mexico, passed away. This is a day of rememberance for the benevolent Emperor and a celebration for all dreamers and mad hatters everywhere. Raise a toast to the Emperor!
