Because of my mother's habit of smoking since she was 17, my brother and I have inherited asthma from her. What in the world can I do to get my mother to stop smoking? I've tried hiding my mother's cigarettes, bribing her with deals like doing her house chores, and constantly asking her to stop smoking up to a point where I feel like ripping my hair out. She won't go to any programs that help stop smoking either because she misunderstands the point of them. She thinks I'm trying to sending her there because she is crazy...I swear, sometimes my mother is so thick headed. What can I do to persuade her to stop smoking without the use of those darn nicotine gum or patches. help??

Well I don't really think that you can make her stop smoking if she doesn't want to...but I think that I can tell you a way that could possibly get her to stop smoking without even knowing that she was quitting...my mother use to smoke quiet a bit and then she started to eat warheads(the sour candy)and now she doesnt really smoke that much anymore because she says that the taste of warheads kills her taste buds therefore she doesn't want to smoke anymore! You could try this and see if it works..good luck!

As a person that is trying to stop smoking (am on day 4 this time) there is nothing you can o to encourage or stop your mom from smoking. As you have probably found out pushing her to quit will only make her angry. She already knows that she needs to quit. And she probably rally wants to but you must let her figure it out for her self. There are 2 things that you might do and that is when she lights one up open the door or window and leave the room until the smoke clears. As a smoker it just make me angry when I get pressured to stop and those commercials for stopping also make me angry.

You can't make her quit. If she is going to quit, it has to be her decision. All you can do is let her know how you feel about it. You could just try talking to her about the dangers of smoking, and let her know that you are worried about her health, and yours and your brother's.

You could try asking her how she feels when you or your brother are having an asthma attack and whether she feels that her smoking is not helping you recover. Ask her what she would do if someone insisted on doing something that made her ill regularly. When she gets indignant about how insensitive this person is that is making her ill, then gently point out to her what she is doing to you and your brother. Smokers are just normal people, some times they need their shortcomings to b e pointed out to them in a way that they can understand. Good luck.

Thanks for that insight. I'll confront her with that in mind.

You know what, darling? That human habit is like drinking. There are situtations, it cannot be stopped by human determination alone. Only the word of God and fear of eternal punishment will make the person turn away from that compellingly. Here is a verse that many smokers were helped to change their mind. To give you idea how you can tell your mom to stop smoking through the Word of God, you may visit angdatingdaan.org. They discuss variety of controversial topics about faith and human thinking, they may cover that there.

I, myself, had started smoking when I was 19. For me, it seems that wanting to quit is not enough. There are things out there to help, but so far, nothing worked for me.
I do have friends who did manage to quit smoking, so it's not impossible. I do have two online friends right here on MyLot who mention that they seemed to manage to stop using chantrix. I believe that a doctor or physician needs to write out a prescription for it though. I have not tried that yet.

i think now you and your brother should do something taht she really feels it. better talk with some relatives. stay at their house for few days. when your mom asks, tell her you have promised not returnng until she stops smoking. look it acts or not.

I feel it is really difficult for you to stop her at this age. But, trying always pays. First, your mother should realize that. Only then, she can stop. I hope she realizes this and act accordingly. Hope you try convincing her and make her stop smoking. Take care.

You cant make her stop, but try and make her understand how much you really dont want her to, show her pictures or facts from people who smoke, say that if she doesnt and you or your brother have an asthma attack how will she react and feel. Sometimes people just need something dramamtical to happen for them to realise what they are doing isnt really for the best and it is effecting the people closest to them :/

Hi
I don't think your mom is going to quit until she is ready. I used to be a smoker. I smoked for 25yr. Nagging doesn't help, I would smoke more when people nagged me. They made me want to smoke to relieve tension. It really wasn't a good situation for anyone. Then I got very sick and through them in the trash the day I found out what was wrong with me. I had tongue cancer. That was 5yrs ago. I am very grateful to be able to talk. I will never smoke again. I have friends that saw what I went through. They still smoke. So just pray about your mom that she stops. Some people never get sick from it. But pray that she doesn't. Hopefully I was some help. I know you hate it but you really do have to lay off a bit. It is hard for all of you.
