Do you grow a garden?

Proper nutrition helps us avoid the cycle of famine, infections and death that plagued early humans. We are so fortunate to be able to obtain a wide variety of fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables as close as our nearest supermarket, or even growing in our own back yards. Do you grow a garden? Are you a neat and tidy gardener with proper rows, or more like me, wild and free?

I have a small garden every year, the older I get the smaller it gets hehehe. Up until a few years ago I always had a large garden, large enough to can and freeze enough veggies for the winter and all year through. I used to do one 4 acre plot of nothing but sweet corn, and that not only provided me with enough corn for the year, but all the other relatives families that lived out here. (We made kernel corn, creamed corn, etc, and froze most of it, plus we donated a lot to the Fire Dept when they'd have their clam bakes, and to the church for theirs.) Now I have some raised beds only, and in them I usually do zucchini, many different varieties of beans, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, and things like that. I don't always do rows, but when I do I plant black & white sections of newspaper (thickly) and put the dirt back over top. This allows me to keep weeds out of the walkways, and if they do start growing, it's easy to mow or pull them. (Nice thing too is that in the fall you just till over the whole thing and the paper pulp feeds the soil like compost.)

I have had intentions of doing the newspaper thing. I think I do not put it down heavy enough. It is a new year, so I get to have a new chance to try.

I wish I did, but I probably am in a wanted poster somewhere in the flower realm LOL I am really bad at it. INdoor plants, outdoor plants.. I seem to kill them all.
I think I have slightly better survival rate with outdoor, but not by much LOL
Rumor has it that if I can kill aloe vera - as I did - I can kill anything hehehehehe
The only thing that I didn't kill so far and have it for over 20 years is a bonsai tree that was my mom's:) But don't ask me why :)

I love having a garden and I am looking forward to having one this year when the weather breaks. I miss going out and picking a fresh juicy tomato and a green pepper. When I was a kid I would have a garden too. I am more wild and free with my gardening. Some things are neat and tidy, not much though.

Oh how I love to garden. I wish I had a place where I could grow vegetables. There is nothing like getting your hands dirty and watching a garden grow to bear fruit. I section off areas and plant in rows or mounds. It is such hard work, but you get many benefits from growing your own produce. You control the pesticides and fertilizer. You get the freshest produce available. Good discussion!

You get a good work out, too. And you get a healthy exposure to fresh air and sunshine.

We do plant some tomatoes and pole beans in pots. The tomatoes do fairly well, the green beans not as well, but the grandkids love to pick them from the vine.

Every year I plant tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peas, carrots, and green beans. All things I can pick and have for dinner. The only things that are in rows are my tomatoes and peas. The rest of it is pretty wild and free.

I often have volunteer tomatoes, and they just bloom where they are planted.

The place I live in is still a considered as a country-style/provincial type of living, there are still wild and untouched places here. Nature is very sweet and giving, we grow some fruits, herbs, local spices and vegetables here.
Our garden is the same as what you have, wild and free. Our neighbors would even exchange their home-grown crops from us, which I believe is a nice way to practice bartering..

I am only able to grow a few vegies mixed in with my flowers. Even though we have an acre of land - I live in the desert and the soil is very poor. So, I mix a few tomatoes, etc. in with the flowers I have growing in beds near the house. That is the only place where we have been able to encrich the dirt evough to grow things.

I just planted seeds in a little mini greenhouse starter. I planted red, green and yellow sweet peppers, zucchini, yellow summer squash, and flowers. The flowers I think are columbine, Ipomopsis ( hummingbird mix), Echinacea (purple), Hollyhock (double mixed), and Lupine (russell hybrid mixed).
I also have giant sunflower seed and two peony roots (double Bowl of beauty) to plant in a couple of weeks when it's warmer. I still need to buy tomato plants, eggplant and other flowers. But I am off to a start with good intentions...lol
Brightest Blessings, Mari

Weather is not really warm enough here. I have sprouted some tomato seeds. I am too busy to do a good job, until school lets out.

I dont grow any vegetables or herbs, although I would like to. My yard, although large, is not really suited to it. When I tried to grow herbs, I found the something ate them. Plus, herbs & vegetables require a lot of water. This is difficult at the moment with our water restrictions.
It is easier to grow fruit trees, & I have seven, but even they are suffering with the lack of water.

I just started to grow a garden in my back yard. I am planting cilantro, serrano peppers and tomatoes. I hope they really grow because this is my first experience. I tried to follow the instructions in the seed envelopes. I made rows and left a distance between the rows.

We always joke that we live on beach front property because when you step out into our back yard, you are literaly stepping on sand. Because of this we have not been able to successfully garden. My hubby promises that he will build me a garden box with soil, BUT... he hasn't yet!

If you can water them enough, and try, you could probably grow watermelon, as they love sandy soil.

Hi Doll, No I am not a tidy gardener..I just love to see things grow together and I think that certain plants like each other so I always plant my peppers in the shade of the tomato plants and the spaghetti squash needs to grow running free amoung the corn so that it won't burn in the hot sun..My garden looks like it was planted by a blooming idiot..lol

I like to grow strawberries and mint! I find lettuce grows easily even for beginners and tomatoes are not too difficult to grow! Snow peas are wonderful and jasmine smells so good! It is important to grow flowers that actually smell like flowers! So many today do not have any smell.

I live in a duplex so we dont have no room for a garden just yet I do have pots of a couple of herbs growing sometimes (when i can talk my fiance into buying supplys or I have cash on hand since I dont work isnt often) but when I get a home I will have a garden Herb, and vegtables and whatever I can find to grow. I'm going to be and Herboligist and grow my own herbs so I can see my customers tell them what they need with there health problems and have what they need on hand. When I have a garden my flowers will be wild and free but im going to seperate my herbs and vegatable gardens.
