I am having a lot of trouble sleeping at the moment as I am pregnant. I have only been getting around 3 hours every night. I am wondering what is the recommended amount of hours of sleep we need a night? Also does anyone know the effects on a persons body by lack of sleep? Or any tips on getting to sleep?

hi kiran i forgot you are pregnant and you will be having baby soon-when i was with both of mine i found it hard to sleep just as you do-but think also everyone does at your stage of pregnancy-obviously lack of sleep can make you irritable and ratty but at your stage in pregnancy i found i was forever cleaning and took it out that way cos myhusband worked shifts that didnt help either, the only way i ever got any sleep was during the day which were only catnaps but that helped a little til i had my daughter cos then i was forever looking after my son etc but mine were 14mnths apart so it was pretty dificult then unless my hubby took over or a friend gave me some time to rest-thats the only advice i can think of-hopefully some of other mylotters can give you more sound advice-littleowl

Hi Littleowl, for some reason I find it hard to sleep during the day. If I ever did fall asleep during the day I would usually feel more tired and irritable after. I also have my three year old during the day, she does not sleep in the day time, so it is impossible for me to catch up sleep then. I know what you mean about cleaning whilst pregnant, nesting bug, lol. Unfortunately still does not make me tired. Hopefully I will get some sleep after baby arrives, then I can lay on my stomach again, which I prefer. Thanks heaps for your help. Sounds like you have a lot of trouble sleeping too with only 4 hours a night, don't know how you manage either.

Hi Kiran! I think the recommended hours of sleep is 8 butit depends on the age group. FOr growing children, 10 is the recommended. For preggies who are having hard time sleeping, try catching some sleep wheneven you feel like sleeping until you are able to sleep for 8 hours. Lack of sleep may make you tiresome for the day and prone to stress and fatigue. When I was pregnant, I try to sleep an hour after lunch, sometimes I got two hours of sleep but never beyond 2 hours becuase it may make me more feel more sluggish.

Hi chrysz, thanks for your response. I wish I could sleep after lunch like you did in your pregnancy. However my 3 year old keeps coming up to me every second of the day, lol. She does not have naps in day as then she won't go to sleep later at night.

I have always been told that 8 hours is the recommended hours of sleep each night. I know that I do not get that much sleep per night. I usually sleep about 5-6 hours a night. It can have a negative effect on your health in the long run as not enough sleep is not good for a persons health. There are probably numerous things you can do to try and sleep better, like taking over-the-counter medication for sleeping, drinking warm milk, not eating anything hours before going to sleep and probably more. You can also talk to your doctor.

I thinks its 8hrs for a normal and healthy adult. But I go to bed at around midnight and then have to start my day at 5 am. So that’s max to max 5hrs of sleep for me. I do tend to feel very tired specially at the end of the week and so on weekends, I catch up with as much sleep as I can. I hope you are not insomniac? If this persists for no apparent reason, I would think you should consult a doctor or a therapist.

Hi, thanks for your response. 5 hours is not much sleep either. I hope I am not insomniac, just hoping it is pregnancy and that I will overcome this sleep problem after baby arrives. Don't like my chances though, my baby is just going to through my sleep patterns even more out of whack. I will consult a doctor if it persists. Thanks for your advice.

You need lot of rest and a good sleep every night. Good sleep will relax your body and mind and it will help in the development of the child inside you. A pregnant lady should get good sleep of at least 7-8 hours. Take care of your health and my wishes to you for a healthy baby. Regards.

The recommended hours for sleep for a human being is 7 hrs. This duration is necessary for normal mental and physical functioning of the body. Lack of sleep can lead to irritability, confusion, it indicates anxiety/ depression. lack of sleep causes anorexia, loss of libido and above all intra uterine growth retardation.

Gee, did not realise lack of sleep can cause so many problems. I definately don't have to worry about anorexia, being pregnant. Sounds serious, intra uterine growth retardation. I hope I can get some more sleep soon as I really do not want to encounter any of these problems you listed. The main problems I have at moment is irritability and anxiety from lack of sleep. Thanks for your response.

Its time to forget the list of problems I stated because they will not let you sleep, if they persist in your mind. Don't try to concentrate on the issue of your sleep, forget it and just relax and think about the future, thats all which is required to take you to a sound sleep........ Happy sleeping

You are supposed to get 8 hours sleep a night, more if you are a child. Pregnant women often don't sleep too well for obvious reasons, but don't worry about it, have naps during the day and get lots of rest. Don't take any sleep remedies (also for obvious reasons LOL) Warm milk may help or cammomile tea, which has no caffeine. Make sure you don't have any caffeinated products at all at night. Maybe you could take a hot bath before you go to bed, that can be relaxing. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Wow three hours a night is not enough sleep at all. Why were you getting so little sleep? When I was pregnant I was exhausted all the time I slept like a rock. I believe we are supposed to get at least 7 hours a sleep for our health. I get that amount and I am still tired all the time and I am not pregnant. When my daughter was little I used to get about 3 hours sleep and be completely fine with it. But since having my son I am just tired all the time. I can barely function on 8 hours sleep let alone if I was still only getting 3 hours of sleep.

It isn't a very specific number for all people; it tends to be around 7-8 from what I have read. However, for some people, especially growing kids/teens, more sleep is desirable. Not getting enough sleep can have a lot of different detrimental effects, like the earlier guy said. Interesting sidenote: I read about a study that stated people tend to prefer either odd or even numbered hours of sleep. I'm not sure how valid this would be, but it's pretty neat to think about...

People sleep a lot lol. Kiran, first congratulations!!! Must be a happy time for you pregnant! And the doctors said that 6 hours already is a health routine. But try to sleep at least 8, for your baby ;)
