Do you keep a diary? Or did you use to write diaries in the past?

I use to like writing in a journal/diary everyday when I was about 13 years old. I thought it would be great to look back on it 10,20 years later and see what life was like back then in my teenage years. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with diaries, my stepdad, photocopied it on time, every page. All my secrets were revealed, I was humiliated. I felt violated and embarassed that he had read my inner most thoughts. So now I am not gain to write a diary as I do not want to risk anyone finding it. It's a shame because writing can be a good release of emotions if upset, it can also be great to look back upon. AS I find today I cannot remember a lot of my childhood as I would have liked to. How about you, do you write a diary today or did you when you were younger? Have you had any bad experiences with nosy people reading your diary? What do you like most about diary writing?

I have kept one since I was little when we left my mom. I kept all the feelings of hurt, dismay, longing and love in those things. I just looked at them not too long ago and I have to say I was a hurt little girl. I am much better but secretly I cried for that little girl that was so lost, and wanted her momma to love her. She still don't like me but I loved her unconditionally. I thought of publishing that one day and sending her the first copy to show her how she hurt me. It also brought back memories of good things that I don't normally remember. I loved life when I was little. And to this day I still write in one.

I am so sorry to hear about your mum. I am glad your diary brought back some good memories of your childhood. Writing in your diary when you were younger probably helped you deal with a lot of emotional stuff, good to let these feelings out. Thanks for your story.

like you i always used to write a diary from a young age and also they held my deepest most inner thoughts-to me my diary is was sacred and personal but in my ex-husband one day read through my diary and there were some very personal things i'd written about him inthere which he had read it was my neighbor that told me about it--to me it felt like an intrusion of my personal thoughts and feelings--we did argue about it but after i stopped writing one-its only just recently i've started too again but its not daily now-littleowl

The story about your stepdad photocopying your diary was horrible! Why did he do that? I think eventhough you were just a child that time, he should have respected your privacy and never read your diary without permission. :-( Anyway, i also kept a diary when i was about 15-20 years old. That was during my college days. You are right, keeping a diary helped me vent my emotions and it was like a spiritual healing for me. That was a stage in my life when i have many insecurities, indentity crisis, inferiority complex, and other things a typical teenager would experience during the adolescence stage. Thru journal-keeping, I got to learn more about myself, my deepest desires, my self worth, my values and aspirations, and of course, i get to vent all my pains, struggles, and happiness i experienced about family, friends, life in general, LOVE. That is when i first write about my crushes and first love. And all my first times, lol. :-) I already stopped writing in my diary, but after so many years had passed my diary notebook is still with me. I loved reading it from time to time and i still enjoy knowing what happened to me in the past and i still get to know myself better. :-)

so sorry to hear about what you had to go through. When I was younger i used to keep a diary and my dad used to want to read it so that he can get to know my secrets or something. i have to keep it someplace secret whenever i am away from home, fearing that he will come into my room and search for my diary. i dont have a diary anymore but now i have a blog and a schedule/planner and i do jot down significant items or happenings. perhaps you can start a blog or something, then at least you can have a place to express your freelings. keep it low or anonymous if you dont want anyone close to you to find out or something like that ;)

I used to keep a diary back in my teen years. I wrote everything I had in mind and heart. I have never experienced having someone read my diaries because I kept all them in a very safe place. If ever someone read my diary, I would really freak out. I don't write in diaries anymore but I still write on a journal especially during my travels.

I mostly just write in my blog. A lot of things other people might not want their friends to know, I either don't care if they know, or actually want them to know. If something is very private, I just don't write about it. I kept my LiveJournal since 2002, and only stopped using it when I got my new blog ( http://hello-karyn.org/vamp-amber/ , if you're curious). It is rather nice to look back five years ago or so, and see just what you were going through. I wrote about all my problems and such, and looking back, I can almost laugh over some of the stuff I got so nervous and anxious about then. I'm sorry about your dad being such a jerk. I can't understand why ANYBODY would do something so unbelievably terrible such as reading and photo-copying someone's private diary. *hugs from a sympathetic stranger*

I've always tried to keep one, but I'll end up keeping one regularly for a couple of weeks but then stop caring. Plus I don't like having to hide it because of personal information and secrets. So I decided to destroy all of them and then now I only keep an exercise journal or business journal to keep my life on track.
