VIN NUMBER - WARNING Here is INFO worth the price of your car.... WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT? The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle, write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #. I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted. The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle. You don't believe it? It IS that EASY. To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief. I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck. I slipped a 3x5 card over my VIN NUMBER.

I am sure that our vin nos are on the chassis inside the engine compartment! Writing the manufacturers is a good idea! xxx

Wow!! Quite interesting... You would think they would be made aware of this situation, and make everyone prove who they really are, or is there no real database out there of Cars owned, etc. so people can be made to prove with ID it is really their car. Another way of allowable car theft for sure, and unreal.

I mentioned this to my husband and he put something over the VIN right away. I'm wondering if any of the dealerships require an ID also when you request the key? I would hope so. I know they would get suspicious if someone kept coming in requesting keys all the time. But I'm thinking all it takes is one time for my car to be stolen. If this is being promoted through emails, I think it's going to give someone an idea! whit

It is a weird place to put it in plain sight. Must be some obscure reason for it. I'm still going to cover mine up. I looked at Snopes and lo and behold, there is an article on this there. Yes, the thefts have happened. Mainly through a used car lot and also targeted are expensive luxury type vehicles they don't want damaged and actually sell overseas. It says it's not likely that our cars will be stolen, but doesn't rule it out!

Hi friend... Thanks for another interesting and informative post. This is very useful and I will make sure we do something similar on our car. We have a vehicle that was police care and is among the 100 most stolen vehicles. Our insurance covered the installation of an immobilizer to avoid theft..but it wouldn't hurt to take extra precautions. I appreciate the way you look out for our interests and the way you find a variety of topics to respond to. Take care...talk soon. Raia
