I am not kidding! Maggie is always trying to eat the grass outside but I wont let her because she will come in and throw up green grass all over. What a mess. Its really warm outside today like up in the 60s so of course my cats are loving it. Now Molly Maggies sister doesnt eat the grass. She doesnt think she is a cow she thinks she is a human.hahahah So Im constantly looking outside to see if Maggie is eating grass.LOL So do your pets like to eat grass too? Do they think they are cows too?

Hi Terry,
They say when a cat eats grass they are doing it because they need something in their diet that the grass provides. And that you aren't feeding her. I have no idea what it may be. But that is what I have heard. It's funny the other cat doesn't.

Hi TerryZ,
My cats are indoor kitties so I don't know what they'd do if they went outside. Now the puppy that I got man he like to chew and bit and attack the grass it's the most hilarious thing that I have ever seen. LOL!! I think he's part cow..but honestly he plays with it more than he eats it. LOL!! Have a nice one hun and congrats on making it into the digest.

Actually Terry, cats and dogs eat grass because they have an upset stomach. Grass does something to help them and yeah they throw it back up. I guess it's a way of helping get rid of what ever it is that's ailing them. It is a mess to clean up but at least she has a better tummy. LOL Just leave her outside a bit longer so she can do her "business" out there.

LOL Awwww come on mommy Terry! Try having 9 cats and most do that. Fun fun fun! (sarcasticly speaking) LOL Or you could do this, when you see her gagging, pick her up and put her out till she's finished then bring her back in. Just a suggestion. :)

My friend had a cat that would fetch like a dog when we were kids. But I have one better.
We had a sheep that we named Be-Bop growing up. We lived on a small farm. She thought she was a dog. She would pal around all day long with our ACTUAL dog, a Collie named Taffy. She was a good sheep/dog. :) She would come when you called her and everything.

Oh wow!
That is too cute. And I don't know anybody who has a sheep as a pet! (That doesn't count farmers who live on a farm). :o) What a cute story. I hope you took lots of pictures of your little ones then. I want to here more about your sheet some sometime! :o)

So is that cats milk you have switched too? Semi cat, full cat or full cream? I know my cat would love the full cream variety, little madam! It's when your cat starts to moooooooo! That's the time to worry! I think cats eat grass as their medicine, make sure she doesn't start smoking it either when your back is turned! You might have to nickname her Daisy. Go on on pull the udder one I know ;0)

My dog Jessie ate grass when she was not feeling too well, so I gather that your cat, Maggie is doing the same thing. I do not think that Maggie thinks she is a cow unless she was nursed by a cow when she was a kitten, so unless that has happen, the reason is that something is not agreeing with her. So the only thing I would do is let her stay out until she throws up and perhaps change the cat food she eats. I suppose like humans, cats have certain foods or brands that they are allergic to and do not worry, she will not start mooing outside and when she comes inside, she will not ask you to turn on the Tv so she can watch the Aristocrats. :)

That's cute! My cats don't go outside so they don't get the opportunity to eat grass, but there's no doubt in my mind they would if they had the chance. As far as my cats thinking they're something else, my Squirt thinks he's a dog - he follows us around like a puppy and he comes when he's called and both him and my Sissy think they're not only humans but that they run the house, which I might as well admit that they do.

My cat Tia does occasionally eat grass too sweety and I have been told before that they do this on purpose to be sick - maybe they have a tummy upset or hairball they want to get rid of! I think it is great that Maggie stays close enough that you can see if she is eating grass - Tia likes to do her rounds and annoy the other cats nearby! xxx

Animals really do have strange eating habits sometimes, TerryZ. I was told a long time ago that when they do this it is because they are deficient in some nutrient that their body requires. I don't know how true that is. It would be nice if you had something to spray on the grass that would harm neither Maggie or the grass, but would make it less appealing to her.

Actually it is okay for your cat to be eating grass. My dog eats grass all the time and I asked my vet about it and she says to let him eat it. She says it helps him to digest his food and they don't eat it just because they like the taste, they know when to eat it because they know they need it. So don't worry about it and let her eat it. It's really okay for her and she knows better than you when she needs it.

Have you tried growing catgrass indoors? If you do a search you can find tons of it for cheap.
It could be that your type of grass outside is not quite right for her hence her throwing it back up. But if you get some natural catgrass she may eat it and keep it down. Then you both could be happy. (smile)
Our dog chews tall grass stalks. She only chews this one particular kind that grows around the edges of our flowerbeds. It's funny to watch her do it. And she doesn't throw it up - thank goodness! -Tink

sorry, think I was typing my response before you mentioned that you already tried catgrass from pet stores. The only thing I could say to that - is there are several different types of catgrass. Maybe you didn't get the right kind for her taste. -Tink

LOL!!! You know what? My labrador does the same. She eats leaves and grasses too. It gave me the same notion that I don't feed him well, but I do. So I researched and found out that sometimes dogs crave for that juicy part of a leaf/grass. Just like us people crave for sweets.

LOL my dog tazz does, but he doesn't usually throw up when he does.
He even has his favorite grass that he likes to nibble on and always goes to check in that area.
Sheba used to like it as well.
My cats don't usually go out so I'm not really sure. When we had only fluffy we used to take her to our trailer when we went camping during the summer and we had a long leash for her but I never saw her going for the grass. She was more interested in looking at everything around her and specially trick the birds that thankfully were to smart for her heheheh

Yeah I think cats need the grass in their diets, it helps settle their bellies, but too much of a good thing can be bad. I pull fresh grass and put it in a box for our cats and they crowd around the box to eat. Its a cute sight!

No, the main reason they need it is because they know that their stomach is upset. My thoughts are, chances are if she is eating it, she already does feel well and is trying to make herself feel better. I'll look in my cat book and see what I can find.

Cats don’t eat grass as a source of nutrients. For them eating grass has a purely mechanical function. Ingested blades of grass trigger regurgitation of indigestible or hard to digest matter, like the cats’ own hair swallowed during grooming, or fur and bones of prey. Expelling this matter through regurgitation, similar to birds of prey, is safer than allowing it to pass through the digestive tract where it could possibly cause a blockage.
Provide indoor cats with potted grass at all time, as they may otherwise chew on houseplants. Discourage your cats from eating grass right after eating a meal, however, as they may unintentionally regurgitate their dinner.

Well Terry, I never let my two kitties out, and alas no grass to eat anyway since I live in an apartment building..but years ago, when I had more kitties and consequently plants (all safe for pets) my cats would chew on them...few minutes later throw it up...Now just WHY cats do that anyway? I mean why do they eat something they know might cause them to throw up anyway? One of those mysteries of life with cats....uh, let me know if Maggie not only eat the grass, but starts mooing like a cow...hehee

I think cats do that, like dogs, to really vomit, especially when they ate something that did not sit well on their tummies. They eat grass to relieve themselves of the unwanted food.

HaHa, maybe you should change Maggie's name to Elsie, remember Elsie the cow from former commercials?, haha.
Poor little Maggie, I think maybe she had an upset stomach, and they eat this to make them vomit.
From what I understand, cats use grass as a laxative to help pass hairballs. And, they will also eat grass to vomit hairballs, or eat it for roughage in their diets. This is another reason that they try to eat houseplants which as you said, is not good for them because some are poisonous.
If you'd like, you can purchase a small tray containing grass seeds and just water it. Voila, you have something for her to munch on. It is better than the outdoor grass, as that might contain chemicals, etc., which are poisonous to them.
I know, I know, but who wants to clean up cat vomit all the time, haha.

they eat grass to 1 get the nutrients from it and 2 to settle their stomachs it justs depends on the day.
when you see her start to gag and cant get her out quick enough then grab a paper towel and slip it under her chin.
makes clean up a snap.
