Do you think English should be the official language of the United States?

For several reasons I believe it should be, but we have always been a country that welcomes differences. While in other countries, Americans have to either find someone who knows English or figure it out on our own, or become educated in the language. Why is it so offensive to some to think that the United States should expect the same of those who are not from here? Is it so awful to require someone who wants to be a citizen to know how to speak the language?
