(sigh)
I know I said before that I wouldn't touch Vista until I absolutely was forced to. I was going to go through my work and buy a custom Dell with XP on it. BUT...I was at Best Buy with my kids cuz they were buying new games, and I "just happened" to wander into the compter area. I found an HP for an awesome price (better than Dell) including a 19" flat screen and inkjet printer. But of course it has Vista. SO....I threw out my opinions and bought the dang thing.
So far it's running great (so much faster than the old one) and there haven't been any compatibility issues yet (Avast antivirus runs on Vista - yay), except for my old scanner, but it didn't work on XP either. -Tink

You should not have many compatability issues where a new computer is concerned because the hardware and installed software are certain to have been chosen for that purpose. Your main issues would be your peripherals and the software which you transfer from the old computer.
The real problem occurs for those people who upgrade their operating system to Vista on their current system. In my own case my scanner and CD writer are not recognised by Vista, nor are several of the programs that I have been using for several years. Whereas my laptop is new and came with vista, so the whole thing works like a dream.

True, since we got the whole system new plus new printer, all of that will work fine together. The printer is an all-in-one which is nice. Although truthfully when I shop for them on my own, I stay away from all-in-ones. They're too unreliable if one component goes out, the others tend not to work either. The only thing I didn't like is that it comes with Works, and not any form of Office. You have to buy that separate. I'm used to Office now more than Works and Office has Powerpoint and Frontpage (yes I know it's not that great of a web editor compared to Dreamworks or others, but I'm familiar with it). But we'll make do. I may try to install my old Office 2000 suite on here (yay for software before all the registration limitations). -Tink

I agree absolutely about Microsoft Works. This seems to be supplied with virtually all new systems nowadays, and the first thing that I did with my new laptop was to remove Works.
I am a great fan of Excel and Word, so I have installed Office 2003.

You know, funny thing is when I was growing up I swore up and down I'd be an Apple person all the way. I grew up with Apples. Apple IIe, Apple IIGS. Then I got into the school and office environment where everything was PC. Now Macs feel like strangers (sigh). Ah well. I'm happy as long as I can get to want I want to - like myLot! -Tink

Well, when I bought my laptop almost a yr. ago, I bought a Dell. I did not have the $$ on a Charge Card to not go that way, and when they offered me Credit, I chose to go Dell's way. I am sure there are laptops out there cheaper, but I got mine Fully loaded with some Expensive programs. It also has Vista. I am not sure if I like it as much as I do HP, but I do not use my laptop that much. I use my home computer the most, and it has XP on it, and runs fine for me. It is a Gateway and a P4, so it should work for me for quite a long time.
Good Luck and enjoy your New computer.
