What's in your emergency road kit? Would it keep you alive.

In Canada, we are strongly encouraged to carry emergency supplies [like blankets, water, food, heat sources (e.g. candles), etc.], in case we get stranded on the side of the road during our harsh winter months. Although I don't carry them in the car, I have a mental list of what I SHOULD have in the car. What I do have is a small shovel in case I get stuck in the snow. And this year I finally got a cell phone ... "just in case" my car stalls in the dead of winter and I need to call a tow truck. (Very poor emergency kit.) My question: What do you have in your car (or truck) for emergency roadside stops? Would it keep you alive?

In Chicago we have the same weather like in Canada, because of Lakes effect. It is very cold, snowy and windy. I always have an extra coat, blankets and I carry water and emergency food with me. I don't travel further than 40 miles from home, but you never know....

You're much better prepared than I am. And 40 miles is still a long way if the car ever stalls in these cold winter months. (Although winter is almost over now ... I hope.) [Sorry I was so long in responding back.]

Fortunately here in the UK, we don't have extreme weather conditions as other countries experience, however we do have gales and flooding, but fortunately we do not have large expanses of open roads, there are always towns and villages close by if you do get stuck. Basically a mobile phone, a blanket, first aid kit and water is in my car all the time and is always replaced just in case, even sucky sweets to give a quick sugar boost are in the car, probably sticky by now but there all the same.
