Why Are We Not Outraged By The Price of Gasoline/Petrol

Why? I moved to the US in 1990 and the price of gas was something like 80c a gallon. Even up until the turn of the century I don't recall it being too much over $1.20 a gallon. After Katrina, prices went through the roof and have never rebounded, there is a new excuse week after week. It doesn't help when the President and VP of the US are oil men.
Prices in grocery stores are following suit as the cost of transporting the goods is rising, yet, what I don't understand is why the people are not outraged?
Watch and read the political surveys about why someone is voting for this candidate or another and you'll never hear or read about gas prices. Are we just resigned to accept that they is nothing we can do about it?
Anyone who understands the economics of the US(which should be most of us) should be able to see that high gas prices will eventually cause everything we use or buy to increase in price and our salaries will not keep pace with it at all.
Am I alone in this?

Hello Bloke :)
We are always complaining about the gas prices here in Ontario, Canada as it is consistently above a dollar a liter!!! This is absolutely outrageous!
These days we are happy if we see 99.9 LOL and that is still far too high!
I remember the days when it was in the seventies and eighty cents was too high! LOL Oh to have those days back again! :)
Thanks for the discussion

I understand that Petrol(Gas) in the UK is over 1 pound a litre, which is equvilent to about $1.80-$2 a litre here in the US! That would equate to about $8 a gallon.
