I apologize if someone else has done a similar discussion, but I just had to weigh in on the horrible abuse suffered by the cattle destined for slaughter by that company in California which led to the massive recall of beef last week. What is wrong with these heartless people? Did it not matter to them that the livestock was being treated so inhumanely? Did it not matter to them that much of this beef would be sent out to provide meals for millions of school children? We are aware of how rampant greed is in our society, but this is way over the top! What do you think should happen to these people who so callously treated these animals? I think they should be forced to close down, or sued until they go bankrupt.

I know. I think that is so sad. I seen it on the news and the poor cattle could not even get up to walk out of the back of the semi trailer. I felt so sorry for the pain the cattle must have been in to begin with. I think they should fine these people or make them spend time for what they did to these animals and for what they could have caused to humans. I think they should be forced to close down also.

Ok. I am going there right now and check that out. I felt so sad when I seen those poor cows being mistreated and they could not even walk. It was bad enough their destiny was already planned for them. I am glad they are out of their misery now.

This may sound warped or crazy but please humour me, whenever I hear of brutality to animals, do you know what I would love to see, is the humans who do this, to have the same treatment done to them that was done to the animals. I know it sounds harsh, but what was done to the cattle is a disgrace, I wonder if those 'humans' and I use the word loosely because they are subhuman were to receive the same treatment as the cattle? But no they have rights! So what about animal rights? Or do they not count? Laughable isn't it, if it wasn't so damn shocking and sad in the process.

I completely agree with you wolfie34!!!! I believe in an eye for an eye. You do something to a person or animal, then you should be treated EXACTLY the same way you treated it or them! Nothing wrong with that...Hell, isn't it in the bible??? As much as people take things from that book so literally, they should practice what they preach(sorry for puns...)

Do I hear shades of "Animal Farm," wolfie? It would be a nice turn of events to see them get a dose of their own medicine.

I was horrified to think that they were using sick cows, and mistreating animals. I don't think we know how much of this really goes on. It is scary that we were unknowingly feeding this to our children on a daily basis. It is bad enough to know that it was sent to restaurants. People are definitely greedy.

Once again, Thoroughrob, the root of all evil. These money-grubbing bosses should be made to give up everything they have gotten in such a despicable way.

I think employers should be held accountable for their staff, if they did less of this abuse would happen.

Most of these employees, winterose, are in fact acting on the orders of their employers who just want to make as much money as they can.

I think the way they treated the cattle is inhumane. Now I as much as anyone enjoy a good steak or burger, but they should at least treat the animals humanely until they end up on my dinner plate. They happy cows in California commercial has always made me mad, because I have driven through cow country in California and those cows are not happy by any means. They are all kept in muddy pens not the nice looking grass fields showed on the commercial. Now I am not advocating that we all turn vegetarian or anything we just need to treat those animals better. There is simply no need for us to be cruel to them.

You're absolutely right, Aurone, and there will be no improvement in these conditions until the people speak out.

Oh I absolutely agree, but unfortunately, unless the majority of the people complain, nothing will really be done about it. I responded to your discussion on moving out of the city to have a garden, I would love to move to a farm and raise my own food, humanely. I already have cut my meat intake and if this continues, I just might go all together meatless or buy meat that is local.. Maybe if more people do that, these places will be shut down..

That sounds like a great idea, carmelanirel. People should indeed be up in arms over this situation, but most don't really care. I know my mother cut down on meat drastically the last several years of her life and it helped her health tremendously.

the whole construct of meat is murder is complex. we want inexpensive food it can only be achieved by cheaply preparing the cow for food . Fact ogf life, ethics cost money blessed be

Sorry but I disagree, ESKARENA. I grew up in a farming community, and saw many animals slaughtered for meat. It can be done in a humane manner.

There is no excuse for mistreating animals. If you have ever looked into the eyes of a sweet steer I do not see how you could ever mistreat it. They have the most beautiful big brown eyes. My cousin used to raise a steer every year for 4H and it was impossible to sell the steer to the slaughterhouse. My Dad used to secretly buy the steer and have it shipped far away so that my cousin never knew what happened to it. We finally talked him into raising baby bulls. At least that way they were not sent to the slaughter house. When I do eat meat I eat Kosher. At least then I know it has been raised humanely and has been killed in the least painful way possible! Yes, Adoniah, there is a right way and a wrong way to slaughter animals. It should be done in the most humane manner.
