There are people who are blessed with talent to write and there are those who have the passion to write. I am a frustrated writer. I have the passion, I just dont know if I have the talent. I love reading too... but more importantly I love to read what I write. Which do you prefer... reading or writing?

My passion's in writing, although I love to read too. I have notebooks filled with things I've written. Advice that I got from one of my writing classes was good: write for your own enjoyment. Keep writing and don't worry so much about editing your spelling or sentence formation as you go, or you will lose the flow. And...write, write, write...like anything else, the more you do, the easier it gets. If you enjoy it, it doesn't matter if you think you have talent or not, most good writers weren't born that way, but got that way from constant pen to paper.
Don't ever get discouraged or frustrated, and don't be so hard on yourself. One good place to start is by relating stories that happened during your childhood, or things that happened in your family. When you tell a story, tell it like you're talking to a friend who's sitting right by you, and you will find your natural voice and it will come out on paper. Most of all, treat it like fun, and not a challenge. Making it a challenge rather than fun is what leads to writers block.

I agree with you. I guess it all started as a diary. Eventually I was able to write in a creative way and people who were able to read them gave good remards. It gives me more inspiration. But you know recently, I signed up for this website and I out of ignorance and my willingness to share my write-ups I posted 7 entries in a row in one day. The top lister or highest earner in the website told me... PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO ARE SPLOGGER IS NOT WELCOME HERE. I was hurt. I really dont intend to be greedy, and money is not my ultimate reason for posting them... I was just carried away because I feel happy to see my work online. I stopped writing for now and still recovering from the incident.

Occasionaly I get urgers to write. However, I do not have the confidence to do anything with my writings. I once had a poem published in a contest I entered online. But you had to pay 50.00$ to recieve the book it was published in. My personal opinion, it was a scam. Anyway, I would rather read than write but would recieve extreme personal satis-faction with others having a passion for my writings. Perhaps one day I will try to submit one of my writings but as of now I am way too shy.

I thought it might be a scam when I had to pay for the book but my Dad bought it anyway for me, then when they sent me a letter saying someone wanted to read it on a CD I was like "ehhhhhhh no" THEN when they sent me a letter saying I had been nominated for an award and even if I won I couldn't recieve my reward unless I paid the six hundred dollar downpayment to attend the ceremony in Las Vagas I knew for sure it was a scam. To begin with, while I was proud of my poem I knew for certain that it was not going to win "best poem of the year". Since then I have not submitted any of my writing to anything for fear of being scammed again.
I was so excited and proud of myself too :(

Princess...
Please don't let one unscrupulous organization discourage you from submitting your poetry to other more legitimate contests or individuals...
If your posting entries are any indication, you are obviously a very literate, inteligent writer. I would imagine that that translates into your poetry as well.
I hope you find the motivation to contribute your work to other more legitimate venues in the future.
Cheers

Thanks guys for taking part in this discussion. As I have said, I love writing and reading... and if I could earn extra money for doing so... it's the best job ever. But I am not really that confident to submit my write-ups except in some website. It was to solicit comments so I can improve. I really appreciate it guys.

Readiing is certainly easier that writing, though I do both. Read a lot of fiction, especially authors like Tom Clancy and Alistair MacLean.
Write on Helium and write factual stuff about history and literature, gives me an excuse to read factual books and is also a good way to learn

I love Tom Clancy too and I enjoy it more when I watch the movies based on his books. I usually read first then watch the movie. In that case I can compare. Usually reading it is more powerful because I can also feel vicariously the emotion of the character. I love history too, I taught history in high school. But one writer that changed my idea of history is UMBERTO ECO. I read his book on Fraternity of the Rose. It changed my view on history of Christianity. But it didn't change my faith, though.

I sooo hear you. In my younger years I just assumed that anyone who loved reading as much as I did must be able to write...alas as you too have discovered the passion for former does not necessarily translate into a talent for the latter.
I have started at least 4 diferent "books" and none have gotten very far. I've taken a creative writing course and have had very positive reviews but those where very short stories with the topic already given to me.
In answer to your question...I beleive I love them both equally, unfortunately I also beleive that my strongest talent lies in the reading end of things...
Cheers

Thanks Sheira for sharing. I started a book called... SAWASDEE: The amazing experience. It was a travelogue of my trip to Thailand. I related the experience I had in Thailand and the describe all the places I've been. But the twist is... I injected bits and pieces of Thai History in there. I am an Asian History teacher and I was thinking of publishing it as reference book for my students so that they will understand history in more personal manner. I thought it's more interesting to learn it if the one telling the story is your teacher, what do you think? But it's still in a manuscript. Sadly, i dont have the resources to publish it.

I think the best writers are those who read a lot. The more you read, the better your own writing will become.
A famous British poet once told me that the only way to learn how to write better is to write and to write and to write...

I agree with you. Through reading, we learn more... techniques, styles, concepts, patterns, and ideas. We can come up with our own style by learning from others. And practice makes perfect... you're right.

People do experience a lot of lapses. I always thought myself as a writer... it's my dream. But you know, I stopped writing for 10 years. Not even a simple letter. Then when I gained back the momentum... I am stoppable. But recently someone told me that I am a splogger so I kinda stop writting again... except to participate in forum like this. You will have your moments too believe me... and soon you will regain your inspiration. Good Luck.

I like to do both. I've loved reading since I was a child and even now there's nothing I love more than reading a good book or two at a time. But I also write and I like to consider myself a writer. I've written one novel that I'm currently submitting and some short stories and poems.
Yes, writing can be a passion and/or a talent or a skill that you can nurture. Like any hobby it just depends on whether you really want to make the time and take the effort to develop. I've been told I have a talent for it, but I still need to exercise that talent every day to keep it strong.

I think I can do both. I am also a frustrated writer. I have a lot of short stories and anecdotes written that is in my possession. I am also a wide reader. I like both worlds.

I prefer to writing since i dont really "diligent" to read.
Because if im reading some novels or books, i dont know i will read only the half part because have no mood to finish them all...

I am not a real writer, yet I used to write small pasages to record everything happens around me.It's a great way to color my life,so I regard writng as my favorite hobby. If you have passion, you will be able to do it without the talent as a part-time writer. But if you want to feed yourself by writing, you have to think about it seriously.

I agree with you. Sometimes I write to release my feelings whatever state it is. When I am angry, writing helps me to save myself from doing drastic things and saying words that I might regret in the future. It helps my relationship too because hurting words have lesser impact compared with verbal ones.
