Hair Dye Horror!

So I have a hair dye horror story and am curious to know if there is anyone else out there who has experienced the same thing. I actually posted about this before but it happened a second time now. I didn't experience it but my mother did. She is 44 and has been dying her hair for years. Probably since the age of of 30 maybe even earlier, can't remember it's been so many years, lol. She started to have grey hairs at a very young age. Like I said she's always dyed her hair and just this last year at the end of the year she dyed it just like she normally does and she had a terrible reaction to it. Her whole face swelled up, she couldn't breathe very well and she got terrible sores all over her head and ears. She had to be rushed to the hospital. So she waited for almost 4 months to go by and by now she has a full head of grey hair, she thought maybe she'd be okay now to dye it again. Well the same thing happend again! Just not as bad as the first time but it was close. So now she is really scared to death to ever do it again. We can't figure out what it is because she's always used those brands in the past. This last one I think she used was even ammonia free. She's always used red, auburn colors than she started to dye it black. She never had a problem with that color untill these last two times but I'm wondering if black hair dye is harsher than other colors? Does anyone have any ideas or experiences like this? She doesn't want to even think about dying it again but I don't think she's ready to face the fact of living with a full head of grey hair just yet at the age of 44. Does anyone have any ideas or tips that could help her out? Thanks so much for your responses:)

well I think the first question that needs to be asked is did your mom get her hair dyed at the salon or did she use a at home kit? I'm courious as to what brands they were if she did them at home. If this happened at a salon you mom may want to look into getting a lawyer. Because it is mandatory for a salon to do an allergy test when you get your hair colored. Many salons do not do this but if someone has an allergic reaction like your mom did they could get into big test. The salon is suppose to put a little of the coloring on your arm or behind your eye. And your suppose to let it stay there for 24 hours. If you have no reaction to the dye than they can color it. You are not suppose to be able to walk into a salon and get a color job done on your hair that same day if it's your first time at the salon, or if the salon decides to change the brand of coloring they used. It sounds like your mom has dermatitis. Its not the ammonia in the dye that your mom is allergic too. Many hair colors contain a chemical called paraphenylenediamine also known as PPD. P.P.D. helps give the dye a natural looking color when placed in the hair and helps the color from fading after being washed. You said your mom used black. well the darker the color used the more P.P.D. there will be. Your mom may want to try using semi permanent hair coloring or temporary hair coloring which will wash out after so many washes. But the P.P.D count in these types of coloring is much lower than it is in permanent coloring. If it is P.P.D that your mom is allergic too she can go for a brand called natural henna or Elumen which is manufactured by the goldwell company. They are the only coloring company that has hair coloring which contains no P.P.D what so ever. you should check into the P.P.D. allergic reaction because many of the symptoms your are describing sounds exactly like the reaction from this chemical. You have to remember that no all allergic reactions surface right away. Some can take years to develop. So since your mom has been dying her hair for years, and P.P.D has been around since the 1980's/ it is very likely that she has develops this reaction from the amount of p.p.d. over the years. Hope I was some help.

I don't have any tips, but I just bought a box of hair die today. I usually buy the same brand but different colors depending on my mood (typically a shade of red). Anyways, I actually decided to read the instructions and the inside of the box says to do an allergy test every time you dye your hair - even if you are using the same brand and same color you always use because you can have a sudden allergic reaction. Not saying I do this, but after reading your post, maybe I will. Maybe she was on a medication or had a change in diet that some how reacted to the dye or maybe the manufacturer change what they use to make the dye. Maybe she should mix the dye and do the allergy test?
