No one really knows when the cat was first domesticated. Egyptians tamed them as early as 3500 B.C. They held them with such reverence that they even represented their goddesses of love and fetility, Bastet, with the head of a cat and the body of a woman. But in Britain, during the Middle ages, the cat was regarded as a symbol of evil. Thousands of them were mercilessly killed. Later their skill at getting rid of rodents helped them regain their popularity. Cats have becomeso popular now that there is a billion-dollar industry that provides services and products for ncats and their owners.
