Software Complexity

As a software engineering student, i am often faced with alot of complexities designing even the most simplest sofware. Issues that bother my mind at first is whihc development style should i use, traditional Programming or Extreme Programming. This is just at the inception. Then, along the line, i see that the product i am developing is intangible, so i cannot see the progress i am making. Next, i notice that even when i write this code, it still cannot be used sometimes by someone, just as a buolder will plan a building and someone use it. Is there really a silver bullet for sofware engineers?
