Yes I give names to my pet dog. I call him "Musong" and whenever I call him, he usually barks with approval and come near me. I think dogs can become familiar with the name and recognize it if it is repeated!

This is a fun discussion. Actually, most of the pets around here have "pet names" that we sometimes call them. Here's the list: The dogs: Skeeter (blue heeler) I sometimes call him "Bumper" because he likes to run towards people and the other dogs and sump sideways into them and "Bump" them. Grady (red heeler) We usually call him "Row" don't know why, but we do. Diddles (boxer/border collie)well, that has become his name, even though his original name was "Tank" which actually fits him because he weighs 95 pounds. Cinch (brittany spaniel) we call him "Stupid" cause really, he's not too bright. you look in his eyes and you can tell there's nobody home. The cats: Spitz we call him "Fluffy" because when he goes outside, the dogs scare him and he completely Fluffs out Thomas we call him "Fatboy" he's a barn cat and is over 20 pounds. The female barn cats don't have nicknames, they are just CT and HeyYou. The horses: Tuff Glitter Bar: He's lovingly known by all as "Biscuit" Captain TNT Siemon: He's known as Yogi or Yogurt, depends on how energetic he is that day. Buzzin Bumble Bee: He's known as Bumble... he just bumbles around out there in the pasture. Hayracks Thunder Jack: He's known as TJ or Thunder, he also thinks he's human. Then there's the boarder's horses, Cowboy, DC, and Snickers. Last year we had to put our two older cats down, they were Boots who we called Babs, and Willie, who we called Wheels Sometimes you just got to go with what feels right and when you name them when you first get them, sometimes they grow into a completely different name.

The replies to this have been fun to read! Yes, I have names for my dogs and it took me awhile to catch on that depending on the name I use, they know how I'm feeling and they react. Gus, the Boston Terrier, knows that when I call him "sweetie" I'm usually sad or upset. "Boo" makes him playful-and I'm usually ready to play with him! "Fishface" relaxes him cos I call him that when he's laying there in his basket and looking cute. "Gussers"--I have no idea why I tack on an "ers" to their names but they like it. Cookie, my rat terrier, is usually called "Princess" in the mornings when she lolls around in my bed long after I'm up. Or when she gets a pillow off the couch and lays down on it. I also call her "baby", "honey-bun" "sweetie-pie", "baby boo" and "cookers". Aren't I just sickening? :-)

Yes, I have given my dogs playful names and call them these from time to time. Their proper names are Secret Party Circle and Magic Mayflower. I call Secret Secey Beaky and Sir Bark A Lot. I call Magic Magica Beaker and Naughty Nipper. They are miniature poodles. Secret is white with black patches and Magic is plain black.

Before we have pet dogs and we always name them "Bantay" which is English equivalent to the word Guard. I love and like dogs before but after thrice terrible experience, I ended up hating dogs. I have bitten thrice. I have a phobia on dogs now and don't want to have one at home. Whenever I walk on the street, I always make sure, I will not meet a dog along my way, if I saw dog ahead, I will cross the street only to keep away with dogs.
