I couldn't believe the customer service skills of these employees

I had reason to shop at Wal-Mart yesterday and I couldn't believe the customer service skills the employees display at this store. I had reason to go to the Customer Service Desk to complete a transaction. While the employee left to complete the transaction I was told to wait. I asked why and the employee mumbled something to me in an incoherent manner and then left the counter. I waited patiently for over 30 minutes and finally asked why I was waiting. I was told I had to be present for them to complete the transaction. Again I asked why. Mumble, mumble. 45 minutes later the employee returns and tells me that they will call me the next day to let me know my merchandise is ready. Today I wait for the telephone call. No call. At 7p I call them. Well, we don't know, we will have to check they tell me. Can we call you back in 15 minutes. 30 minutes goes by. I call back again and the person that answers the main phone number says "Yeah?". Not Wal-Mart, can I help you, but "Yeah?". I said "Yeah, what?" Oh she stutters, "Yeah this is Walmart." I couldn't believe it. Then after talking to the customer service desk again find out that my transaction has never been completed and now I will have to wait until Monday. I know that most of the employees are young and that this may even be their first job, but really can't I expect more than this? Don't you think they should spend more time teaching their employees customer service skills before putting them out on the floor? Whats your opinion?

I think some of the WalMart employees are lovely and some by contrast are in such dire need of training that they have no business being in contact with the public, but I also know that Wal-Mart prices are as low as we are likely to find anywhere and that I have the choice to shop elsewhere. It is not just WalMart, it is almost everywhere. Called anyone for customer service on the phone lately? It is ALMOST enough to make a person feel like whining.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a choice of whether I shopped at this store or the next. The voucher I had was for this store only. I'm not saying that it applies to every individual in the retail field, because I have worked in it myself, but I just couldn't believe how untrained the employees were that I came in contact with.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because I've never really dealt with them being like that. They've usually been very courteous and helpful...but that doesn't surprise me at all that they would be like that!! And don't get me wrong, I have come across some really rude ones when checking out, but I dismiss it pretty quickly because of all the rude people that shop there. I've actually come across more rude customers than I have employees. Go figure!

You're welcome to both comments LoL :) I worked in fast food and know exactly how rude people can be as well. Why I had put up with it for as long as I did is beyond me!! But that's why I dismiss it if I get a crabby cashier. Do you mind me asking why you call your sister that?

Thanks Rosey. Thats a nickname I reserve for one of my sisters. Her real name is Roberta. LOL. Its always been a little term of endearment. Anyway, you bring up a good point, because I have worked in the retail field and I've dealt with just as many rude customers as I have employees. Thanks.

well some employees have been with walmart for years and are quite good with the general public, while the students that they hire do need more training and that sort of thing.

Agreed, my rant is not directed at every single employee there.

I am absolutely astonished that a major corporation like Wal Mart would find this acceptable customer service. Apart from firing off an angry letter to the store manager I think that you should ask them what their customer training policies are. I have an occasional job at present working for a retail marketing company where we measure just this type of thing. Was the assistant helpful, did they explain what was happening, did they apologize for keeping you waiting? All that kind of stuff. The companies really do want to know about these things as their reputation rests on it. I really don't think that you should let this matter pass.

I'm glad there is someone out there monitoring retail service. I probably should say something. I don't blame the young kids that haven't been given the training they need. More or less they were just thrown out on the sales floor and I know that from experience. Its the store itself that is lacking in providing the training required.

As far as Walmart goes, so far every one I have been to the employees have been nasty. My family and I have this joke that you must be a total jerk in your interview or in your everyday life to get a job there. We went to one at the beginning of the school year for school clothes and supplies for 5 children. My oldest daughter is in the transition of girls shoes to womans shoes and could not find the shoes in her size. When we asked the lady working that department if they had them the response we got was "How do I know, your guess is as good as mine!" so we returned with no problem we will shop somewhere else, left 2 filled carts sitting there and starting walking. This woman yelled at my mom "Oh your just gonna leaves these here huh? What am I supposed to do with them?" My Mom and I both responded with...."How do I know, your guess is as good as mine." And the woman called my mom a b*tch. When we reported this to the manager (after waiting about 20 minutes for someone to get her)We were told that they had a hard time believing that but the situation would be handled. Apparently the way to handle rude behavior it to award the employee....we went in 2 weeks later and she had been promoted to manager.

Do you know the Chick-Fil-A fast food retaurants? We don't have them over here but they are still run but the founder and his family. Whilst I have issues with the products (I am fiercly pro free range and organic chicken) their customer care service appears to be fantastic. The problem with WalMart is that it is so big, with a relatively high turnover of junior staff that I suspect that they battle to maintain the quality that they aspire to. But this is not an acceptable excuse. Stores thrive because they offer the customer what they want at a price that they are prepared to pay. Calling customers a b**ch and being otherwise offhand with them is worse than appalling. They need to understand how unhappy customers are with the way their brand is being sold.

Oh some of them are very skilled. You may not believe it .In my country the sales people are too good.I purchased a tee shirt from a going on sale this was the last one left and I just fell for it on first sight luckily it just fitted me perfectly. After the remaining shopping we went to the paying counter to check out.The made rush made us wait for an hour.We were almost done the sales guy was filling our bags he was cute as he went to put my tee shirt it fell off from his hand and disappeared under the table when he pulled it out it was full of grease. No problem madame I just exchange it for you he said and went away.He came back after a few minutes the T-shirt washed and he ironed it right in front of us and gave it.My friend was so mad at him and I too lost my patients. We demanded our money back and left the store totally disgusted.

OMG! I thougt I was the only one who received "sucky" customer service at OffMart...as in, the majority of their employees appear to be slightly or somewhat off! The one out here in Northern, Ca is so bad that I do not go there and would not go there if they were giving away free money for shopping there. It's not worth the stress. Not to be rude, but I actually thought they had some sort of arrangement with a "government agency" that supplied them with the majority of their workers. I stopped shopping at Offmart and started patronizing Target or Tarshay if you will, because of the terrible service I constantly receive at Offmart. Always low prices? How about they change the taglien to "Always low class". They should know that their employees are the direct contact that customers have and leave a lasting impression of their company on shoppers. Their employees represent the company do they not? It's not just me either. My friends do not even dare enter the store in the southern part of our town on the 1st of the month because the shoppers are rather, "impolite" if you will and the shelves look ransacked. Further more, my brother went to their after Thanksgiving sale last year at 5 am and to this day suffers from post traumatic stress syndrome over the incident! : ) He said that they all were awful and smelly and he didn't think they had slept or bathed in a few days. I asked him if he was talking about everyone in line with him waiting to get into the store and he said he meant the employees too! Practically my entire family has jumped ship from Walmart to Target.

Wow, where in Northern California do you live? I lived in Santa Rosa for over 20 years. I don't remember being too impressed with their store there either. In fact at one point it was open 24 hours and then they began closing it at midnight because of the caliber of people that visited their store after midnight.

I agree since I worked there 13 years ago the customer service skills are terrible. I almost wanted to call customer service myself the last time i WENT.I am disablied due to having ms. Anyhow I was getting my money out to buy myself some contacts before I could reach the desk the girl says sorry yo will have to wait. She saw me coming and right before I went up there she cashes out. That was so rude. If I go to buy contacts again and she does the same thing or acts this way I will call customer service. It sounds like you should also. I don't like Walmart as much since they became Super Walmart. There are some very rude people that work there. I have also had some rude ones when I have checked out there.

I'm not sure about Walmart but I used to work at Sam's club. I know that we didn't really get a lot of customer service training. All of it was done on a computer program where you can just skip through what the screen says. At the end you take a test and if you score 80% or better you pass and don't have to take it again.. My parents had basically taught me everything about treating people like I wanted to be treated so I got a lot of the same customers even if I had a line. Most of my jobs have been in customer service. I know that it's not always easy to be nice.. but making you wait for 45 minutes with no response as to what is going on is ridiculous. I do think that you should call or write either the manager of the store or the home office.. 1800walmart is the corporate office number I am sure of.. good luck with it..

I don't shop at wal-mart too much but can't say I have ever been pleased with their service or lack of service as the case may be. I never had dealings with the customer service department before but other areas including the checkout and electronics a lot of the employees in those sections seem to hate their jobs and only saty for the money. It is a shame but the only thing we can do is shop else where, which is what I have started doing.

As I worked for wal-mart I know how things work. Its not about training-its about people having to work for the crappy company. Nights is always short handed-really who wants to work nights? Your best bet is to call before 2 pm.

I worked 1 to 10 and our store was always short handed. And they would put me on the phone or where ever they needed someone and not show me how and just expect me to do it. So was it really crappy service or someone that didnt know?

I totaly agree with you katherine that they should spend some time and money on good training. I myself am in the food service industrie as you know, I also use to run a small cafe, in my mind customer service is the name of the game. You can even have bad product I have found, but if you are respective and respound quickly people will come back. I also understand probably why Walmart does not want to train, it will cost to much. These employees make low pay, so why invest in them. It would cutt into their profts Myself I have been to good Walmarts, where the service is wonderful and I have been to ones were well lets just say I never went back. If more company's would just realize, that is is the product that brings a customer in, but it is the service ,that being the staff, that brings them back again and again.

Very well said Deea. Thanks. I understand not wanting to put alot into training people that might not stay long, but then again maybe they'd stay longer if they gave them more incentive and a quality position to work with.

Yea well, it is seems to me it can't be very cost effective, to have to train people over and over, the adds for employment aren't cheap, interviews all of that takes from the bottom dollar, if they thought it through they would maybe save money by training, like you said give them incentive's and goals, so they can retain their employee's, Target must be doing something right to keep their folks there.

dont know anything about wallmart or any of that stupid american garbage. If you dumn yanks are stupid enough to give all of your money to one company giving them a monopoly then basically that company can and will get away with anything. lessons to be learned there i think, not that you will cos i assume they sell food and the rest of the world knows how obese america is...

Who is to say that I only shop at one store? I shop at many stores and I don't believe that that is what the issue was here. Perhaps you should read what is posted prior to jumping off and answering willy nilly. I don't think I mentioned food once in my post, so please pay attention to the details. Furthermore, I prefer that you not attack America as a whole in my post, there are other discussions for that. Mine is not the one. If you don't like American's then perhaps you should check out a profile before posting and only answer to those who do not live in this country.

Wow - I certainly wouldn't be shopping there! We had a supermarket near us where the staff were a lot like that and I only ever went there if we didn't have time to go elsewhere! That one has closed down now! We have an Asda about 6 miles away and I do go there when we can (it is a division of Wal Mart) and the service we get there is next to none! I also worked in another large supermarket when I was 16 for 2 years and there were a lot of other teenagers - we prided ourselves on delivering good service and being pleasant and friendly so I don't think age is an excuse - I would certainly be complaining if I were treated in this way! xxx

I did complain. I printed out a copy of this discussion and gave it to the assistant manager of the store. When he walked away, he was actually reading it.
