I think its meaning is somewhat similar to "cooperation", but my friend considers "compromise", what so you think?

cooperation and compromise are different from conformity; conformity means to AGREE in a certain things with your own BELIEF while cooperation is refer as to work for a common benefit. compromise is a MUTUAL AGREEMENT, it is like a mutual promise (in latin- Com + promittere; in english- com + promise). hope this will help you...

I would say it means being conventional, acting in the same way as everyone else. To conform to the ways of others is not right for everyone but if you don't conform to society you may be seen as rebellious, eccentric, devious or dangerous.

i think both of you are a little bit off. conformity refers to corresponding to, or abiding by certain rules and norms. for example, people conform to society's rules by following the laws and not breaking them. however, somebody who breaks the laws of society is seen as "non-conforming" because they deviate from society's norms, rules or regulations. hope that helps!
