As a backpacker, I often have to make long trips. There's always the choice between lengthy, bumpy, cheap, uncomfortable bus rides wherer you get to see the most amazing scenery and can meet some cool people or fast, expensive, comfortable, nothing to see flights. When you're not limitied by time nor money, which one do you prefer?

I prefer a train journey to a bus journey. I have been of some memorable train trips like from Mombasa to Nairobi I slept in a comfortable bunk. In the morning whilst eating breakfast I saw a giraffe. I have been on a some very scenic train rides in New Zealand seeing soaring mountains and a wide blue ocean. I have been on some amazingly long and interesting train journeys in Australia. There was a club loco car on the one between Cairns and Brisbane. I booked my tickets with Amtrak in advance for one of my trips to California. The train was 5 hours late and it arrived at midnight. Amazingly they gave me a free half hour taxi ride to Monterrey in the middle of the night. It cost them $40.
In Samoa bus travel is such fun. If the bus is busy people sit on each others laps. In Indonesia buses are packed and there is so little leg room. I have chatted to some interesting people whilst on a long bumpy bus ride. In some countries there are no trains available so I happily take the bus. Looking out of the window at the scenery the bus is passing is a great thing to do. I spent a long and uncomfortable night on a buses from Trieste to Dubrovnik. Trains are more comfortable than buses at night.

Give me a plane ride any day! My one and only Greyhound bus was enough for me. I would like to try a train tho! I think that would be fun!

I some places that is the only choice. In Costa Rica the only easy way to get anywhere from San Jose is by bus. In my travels across Canada I have been driven in a van, gone by plane, train and bus. The train is my favorite since you get the best of all worlds if you have the time. Since I got my laptop, trips by train are much better.

It depends where I'm going, but I generally prefer to go by plane. I don't really enjoy scenery unless it's of th coastline/ocean.

I have never really traveled by bus. Only a few times and they were chartered buses, so the trips weren't bad. I have flown to a couple of places, and I love to fly. The airport security is a little aggravating at times, but it is necessary. I wouldn't mind taking a bus if the trip was short, but for longer journeys, I would prefer to fly.

since i have a back problem, I always prefer to be on the plane. But if im on a tight budget when travelling i take the bus. But there are certain trips that i do that cannot be done by plane so i take the bus and what i like it becuase i see wonderful sceneries, and i take picture while the bus is moving. That is also the time where i could sleep :-)

I think bus rides are cool and there is a lot to see. I just have this weird fear that is always in the back of my mind that I am going to end up in the wrong place. I love to fly, and there are so many more places I can see if only I could afford it! Going to take a lot of myLot entries to earn a ticket!!

i am quite cheap, so id rather choose bus whenever possible. Feels that technically its not so damn much different between airlines and busses, the time yea but still there exists similarities. Yea busses can be bumpy, airplanes can also be that because of something called turbulence. The air in busses can get a little musty during a long trip, and many airplanes recycle around half the air they take in or eveb more to save fuel(getting a lack of breathable air during longer flights). their isnt much space in either of them, that is if your not flying on a first class ticket.
I agre that there exists really stunning scenery, stuff you miss when being 10 miles up in the air, not reffering to the 10 mile club. Clouds dont really come in any larger variety and everyone that isnt working as a meteorologist would find it instantly boring to stare at clouds. If i wasnt limited by cash, id still take buss, whenever possible. Il only take plane if forced to.
