They are mystical and magical yet they are also a very real part of life for many people. Are you one of those people? I am. I can not see them or hear them as I know others can, but I sense their presence around me. They help bring goodness and happiness to my life and when I ask for their help they send it. If you are a fellow fairy believer (or similar) share you favourite fairy site here or what they fairies mean and do for you.

My great-grandmother seemed to see the Faery folk everywhere. Imagine a very old, very fat woman who rarely moved from her recliner suddenly jumping up, running outside, and dancing while singing in Gaelic. Yeah, that was her. I'm not as lucky as she was. When I was little, I could see them clearly all the time but now I only see glimpses most of the time, though occasionally I'll get a real visit. I try to leave out milk once in a while to be friendly. :) I can't imagine not believing in faeries, personally, but then I grew up with that experience. Since my son who is not yet two has already once danced with the faeries with me, I'm quite sure he'll grow up believing in them as well.

That was a fantastic story about your grandmother. It brought a big smile to my face, I can picture her clearly! You are lucky to get visits, I can not imagine not having them around either. My eldest is a firm believer as well, they are a very big part of her life and she is already learning about asking for their help in times need. It is great how they can live in the eyes of youth. Thanks for sharing

My grand daughter (who is 9) asked this question the other day. She, of course, believes in the pink sparkly kind with wings which can be of no aerodynamic value and must be a terrible nuisance to them when dressing and so on. She claims that these are all female. The males, apparently, are called elves (or gnomes - but she wasn't too clear about that because they are so different.) There are many stories of fairies, showing that it is a very persistent and widespread belief. Looking at these stories, it becomes obvious that the pretty pink and shimmery kind (such as depicted by Disney and in those excellent Flower Fairy books by Cicely Mary Barker) are a relatively modern development which can probably be traced to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. I certainly don't believe in the reality of that kind, attractive though they are! The much older stories of 'little people' which seem to be describing semi-spirit beings very different from humans are the ones which most interest me. Some years ago I came across a book called 'The Magic of Findhorn' written by Peter and Eileen Caddy and Dorothy MacLean. This introduced the concept of 'nature spirits' which they call 'devas'. The name and, in some respects, the idea comes from a Hindu concept but the beings with which they collaborated to produce the miracle of a productive and burgeoning vegetable garden on the bare sands of a trailer park on the Findhorn peninsula in Scotland are really more akin to the Western idea of fairies than to their Hindu namesakes. Very briefly, Dorothy and the Caddys claim to have encountered through meditation beings which are the carers of particular kinds of plant and animal life and also of inanimate objects. By working with these beings, they were able to produce a fertile and productive vegetable and flower garden on sands which normally just barely supported only the grass and other hardy plants of sand dunes. Skeptics have, naturally, offered other reasons for their success and it is, of course, true that wonders can be obtained by fertilising even the poorest soil with humus derived from plant material (which is what they did). The beliefs and ethos of the Findhorn Community are, however, honest and, above all, logical and they have built up a thriving meditation centre around their original garden. Here are a few links to sites with information on and explanations of Findhorn and Devas: http://www.findhorn.org/ http://www.transformingenvironments.com/gardening/biodynamics.html http://ecovillage.org/enc/deprecated/articles/bradley00.htm http://www.geocities.com/athens/Olympus/3987/devas1.html The nature spirits - devas - to which the Community attribute their success seem to be a much more believable and logical explanation for the origin of all the stories of fairies than the pretty-pretty gossamer winged kind which are mere 19th Century fancy.

owlwings, thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge on fairies with us. It was very interesting. I have heard of similar beliefs before and I do agree that fairies are not always pink! I am off now to look at the links you so kindly left :0)

I believe in fairies. I believe I've had encounters with them on several occasions. I do believe that I had several fairies in my home at one point. I saw, on several occasions flits of small, brightly colored lights off and on in my house for a period of about a week or so. They left though, didn't cause as much trouble as I've heard they can cause. It was definitely an interesting encounter though.

That is very lucky for you to feel they have been at your house. A long time ago they were with me all the time, only I didn't realise it. A supposed friend got rid of them for me, he thought they were out to harm me (which of course they weren't) Slowly I can feel their presence growing again in my house, which I am very happy about. I have been busy creating fairy garden for them so I hope they like it. Thanks for sharing

They are real they are around us protecting and watching over us. I believe that I am actually connected to them as some days I get a really wierd but nice and magical feeling that I am at that moment connected to them and that some of their magic is inside me. I also believe that there are real life angels on earth, my partner thinks I am one as I am unselfish and pure. I beleve that all mystical creatures arereal you just have to belive so that you can gain the benifits and happiness of them.
