Have You Ever Had Tilapia?

If someone had asked me that a few months ago I'd have asked what the heck is Tilapia. Then a friend said it was her favorite fish so I decided to try it, and today I finally did. It was delicious! I breaded it with House of Autry Seafood Breader and fried it in olive oil about 5 minutes on each side and - YUMMY! The best part is while at our local Giant Market any kind of fish is so expensive it's ridiculous but I got this at Save-A-Lot and did I EVER save a lot! So, who here like tilapia, who had never heard of it before or am I some kind of dummy because I never had, and if you've ever fixed it how did you do it?

I had grilled tilapia on Thursday night, blackened Cajun tilapia actually and it was very good. For those that don't think they enjoy fish, tilapia is one of the mildest tasting and smelling fish and I think it's similar to flounder.
Tilapia is also very good broiled in a butter or lemon sauce and lightly seasoned. In the summer months we eat tilapia/founder a few times a month, especially when one of the really good markets have it on sale.
Now you've got my mouth watering for more of the that blackened tilapia I had the other night!

I make a mixture of paprika, salt, black pepper, onion powder, thyme, garlic powder, oregano and cayenne pepper ( a bit heavier on the paprika & just a pinch of garlic powder) Mix together until well blended and apply liberally on to the fish. Allow to sit for atleast 15 minutes before cooking.
Frying is usually quicker to achieve the "blackened" result.
I use canola oil, but vegatable oil can also be used.
heat the pan over a high heat...add oil, heating until almost smoking , then add the tilapia fillets. Cook on each side approx 3 minutes or until fillets look opaque and flake easily with a fork. Allow to sit a few minutes and serve.
My hubby makes the tilapia on the grill from time to time, but it doesn't quite blacken as well as it does when fried.

yeah my wife cooks tilapia all the time. It is some very good fish. We usually bake it or grill it, but I have heard it is good fried too. It doesn't smell much like fish when you cook it, and it doesn't have a strong taste like some fish do...I would definitely recommend it. You may want to try it baked with some lemon pepper seasoning the first time...serve it over rice and put a little cocktail sauce on it.

Tilapia is easily available in Malaysia and it is quite cheap over here. I alaways love to take fish and Tilapia is one of my favourite fish. The most expensive fish in Malaysia is "empurau" and not everyone can affort to buy it and you can hardly get it too. The texture of the fish is really superb and delicious.

I keep seeing it in the store but have never bought it, because I was afraid I wouldn't like it. But now I think I'll try it. It's generally less expensive than much of the other fish there. I like Catfish a lot, but that's a real southern thing. I don't think most people have eaten it, unless you're from down here. The Tilapia is less expensive than the Catfish in the store I shop in.

We have Tilapia here in my country, in fact you can see and buy them in almost every market. But honestly, I don't like eating it that much. Depending on how it was cooked, I prefer mostly prefer it battered and deep fried or filleted.
We have fish ponds here also, where we can catch them. I think there are two varieties of this fish, as it can be bred from fresh water and salt water. My favorite was, the one's bred in salt water..

Oh yes, tilapia is very common here and taste really good. We fry it, grill it or bake it. I usually put a mixture of chopped tomatoes, onion, ginger and salt inside the head and stomach part of the cleaned fish then squeeze some lemon juice and put the fish in aluminum foil then grill or bake it, taste really yummy. We often eat it along with rice.

It was just recently that i knew that it's also called tilapia in other countries, all this time i thought the word tilapia is only a filipino/Tagalog word. Anyway, here in the Philippines tilapia is one of the bestseller fishes next of course to our national fish. You can buy it in any wet market at such a low price equivalent to about 2 US dollars per kilo. We would always cook it either fried or grilled and others i think like it in a sweet and sour sauce. I wouln't have thought this fish has now become an international star as i've read somewhere that it's also being recommended in gout diet, low calorie diet and as ingredients in the South Beach diet. This is really one fish that so delicious and nutricious yet not that expensive.

If you've like tilapia then you would definitely like bangus or milkfish. Both can be fried, "sinigang", or grilled with tomatoes, etc...

A really good local restaurant around my house does a crusted Tilapia with a banana sauce and it is amazing. I like Tilapia, it's nice and light. I have never tried to prepare it at home though.

I don't eat fish. I like fish sticks sometimes. Well we were at the store one day getting fish sticks, my husband said you should try tilapia. I said nah, it will probably taste like all the others. But he talked me into trying it anyway. I liked it. I couldn't believe it but I liked it. Fish isn't my choice of food but when it is, it will be tilapia.
