What food items in your kitchen cupboard do you have another use for?

Eg. Putting lemon jiuce in hair to naturally bleach in the sun. Baking soda to clean with. I posted this as after yesterdays discussion on baking soda being used for a deodorant it started me thinking what other everyday kitchen cupboard items can we use in a different way. Please share your thoughts and ideas. Ellie :D

Vinegar is good for lots of things. I clean with it and keep a small spray bottle handy and add just a bit of water and use it as an air freshener.
The smell doesn't linger, but it sure does help get rid of other odors without using the store bought stuff that has chemicals.

Hi, I have never thought to put in a spray bottle like that before, excellent idea. I know when I was little my mum always used to used vinegar in the final rinse when washing our hair to make it shine and anything that stop chemicals being used is fantastic. Many thanks for your response. Ellie :D

Vinegar I use for cleaning off hard water build up. Like on my shower head. I take some vinegar and put it in a baggie and tie it over my shower head and leave it for a while. It takes off all the hard water build up. Also mix it with baking soda to clean the drains.

Baking soda is a fabulous item. I use it in my laundry, in the frig, to clean with, brushing teeth with, etc. It is a fabulous item and I keep it on hand a lot. I also add a little bit of it to the litter box to help keep it fresh.
I hear that vinegar is a nice item to have on hand too and I plan to use vinegar water this week to clean with and see if it helps get some of the nicotine stains off the walls from my husband smoking.

Used coffe grounds (still damp) does an excellent job of removing smoke smells too. Best in smaller areas like a car. Put your used grounds in a used plastic tub and place them on the floor of the backseat. Absorbs smells and leaves the yummy smell of coffee!

I've been using straight melelueca (tea tree oil) to stop mold growth. I have an older house with metal windows. Twice a year I wipe the window tracks with pure tea tree oil and leave a little in the track. Keeps the mold away for six months! Smells good too!
I've also used it on mold growing on walls - it never returned!
I live in a VERY humid climate!

Oh, another use for vinegar!
Clean your drip coffee maker. I do it every few months because the water leaves a buildup (like the shower head that the other poster mentioned).
Run vinegar through the coffee maker, then run several pots of water through it when its done to get rid of the vinegar smell/taste.

Jetdry works well with cleaning a coffee maker as well as long as you run plenty of water through it to get all the residue out. I figured this one out after we moved from a place with a dishwasher to a place without one and i was left with a half bottle of the stuff. My coffee maker was sparkling inside and out! :)

Hmm ok I use white vinegar to take the yellow stains out of white shirts , also good to potty train puppies and it keeps them from marking that same spot.
Brown sugar is a great sugar scrub , take a cup of that and a little bit of water to make a sort of paste and scrub or you can even use baby oil in it .
Avocado is great for the hair and skin just mash a ripe one (look for them on the reduced rack) with some olive oil for your skin and your hair just leave on for about 30 mins wash it off and yay!
oatmeal and honey face mask ! make your oatmeal thick and add some honey to it mix it while its warm and apply to your face leave on for 20 mins .
toothpaste is grate for pimples , it has to be the paste type , just dab on and leave on overnight it really drys them up .
Warm lemon water can wake up your skin for a great skin refresher.
To soften cuticles in warm oil , just place in little bowl for 10 seconds until warm only not hot and soak finger tips for a few min's and push back cuticles.
White vinegar is also great for people with dandruff.

Thank you for listing all the excellent extra uses these everday household items can be used for. Knew the one about toothpaste on spots as my daughters have been doing that one for years and it does really work. Don't suffer from dandruff myself but thats an interesting one if any of you guys or gals suffer on myLot. Appreciate you sharing. Ellie :D

Yes, I use baking soda mixed with a bit of bleach on my shiny bin. It makes it look clean and shine. I use baking soda to clean tea stains off spoons. I use white vinegar on my windows and dry them with newspaper. It works really well and makes my windows really clean.

I buy white vinegar buy the gallon when it's on sale. I use it for lots of the things already mentioned here.
Forgive me if someone else has already covered this one, (didn't see it in scanning others' responses), but my very favorite discovery is vinegar to replace rinse agent in my dishwasher. It's a bit more trouble, (you have to wait for the final rinse to start filling, open the door, and just pour 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar anywhere inside the machine. I pour it right on the dishes. I started doing this when I got disgusted with the rinse agents that cost a fortune and performed their job poorly. Now my glassware comes out spotless every time! I also like the idea that vinegar is a healthy alternative to rinse agent. I should mention also that this has led to a great side benefit for us----I have a rather old dishwasher, but even friends comment on the fact that it looks brand new! The vinegar rinse combined with the very hot water has completely protected the inside of my dishwasher from any stains or buil-up. I'll never switch back. I recommend trying this to anyone who is willing to go to the extra trouble of catching that final rinse cycle. You can also adjust the amount up or down, depending on the hardness of your water. Use as much as you need, it leaves no taste on dishes, and vinegar is cheap.
I also don't use the dry feature on my dishwasher. This is the most expensive cycle to use, so I just open the door slightly after the final rinse and let those dishes air dry. Still, no spots!
smiles to all,
ink

I always open the door on the dishwasher when I do use it rather than the drying cycle, but I very rarely use it cos the dishes don't seem to clean as well as when I do by hand. Only use it really if I have lots of guests but on learning this I will give the vinegar a try and see whats happens. Thank you so much for sharing. I have some in cupboard so will test tomorrow. Lets see. I use lemon for the odor in my garberator. I just slice one in half and put it down the garberator and turn it on and it takes out all the smell. I use baking soda in my fridge and deep freezer and my micorwave, for the odor. I use vinegar for all kinds of things, like cleaning and washing the floor and I even use it for heartburn, and it really works. When you have heartburn just drink about 1/4 cup straight down without taking a break from drinking it, and your heartburn is gone almost instantly. I actually heard about that one on TV and was surprised to see it works. I pour ant brand of cola in my toilet and let it sit for about 10 minutes and then flush the toilet, makes it nice and shiny.
I know there are a lot more, but just can't think of them now. I also wanted to read what other people have posted here, for more ideas of things that I can use.

I used cornstarch for my son's bottom when diaper changing. I also use vinegar as a 'deoderizer' when I cook fish. Little vinegar in water a simmer as you cook fish - seems to help eliminate the fishy odor.
