Is there a time when you realise that some people can not be educated?

As a teacher with adults with a variety of psychological problems I have often heard it said that you cant educate pork, seriously do you think there are people who cant be educated or is it just teaching methyods that need to be adjusted?

Yes. I have tried to teach people things before and they just could not understand or comprehend a word of it. I have tried several times and several different ways. i have come to realise that you cannot teach someone something unless they really waN to learn also. alot of it is lack of ability.

I know what you mean but sometimes it is just impossible. I hated Geometry in school because I just could not figure it out. My teachr did not take the time to teach me one on one either so I never learned it. I made all A's and B's in school but could not get past a "D" in that class for nothing.

I believe that it is very difficult to teach a person that doesn't want to learn.Thankfully most people have a need, a curiosity to learn so that balances things.
Apart from any serious condition that will not allow a person to retain or even understand the concepts being thought I"m sure that it will always be possible to change methods until a suitable one is found that will allow the person to learn at least basics.

Yeah, im really agree with you. Its really difficult to teach a person who doesnt want to learn something that is not important for him. Its like... if i'm not interesting to learn ballet, i will never enjoy and not interesting to learn it. I dont want to dance ballet even you will provide me a world ballet professional instructor. Hhahah...
Some people also do not know what they are supposed to be,or even they have dreams, but they dont have any ability for it.

Eskarena,
My mind is fluttering around as I am wondering what prompted this question from a teacher. Was it a bad day? Yes, I think ONE possiblity is that the teaching methods could be changed; but another is also that the student could simply have had an off day. If the majority of the students in your class "get it", then your methodology is obviously working; however it might not be what the one challenging student needs. If that is the case, is it possible to switch her/him to another teacher to see if she/he improves? I have never been a teacher; but I have been the author of behavior, independent living skills, recreation, and community integration programs for the mild to severely mentally challenged populations. With dedicated and CONSISTENT teaching, training, and appropriate reward/consequence that gradually tapers off; I can honestly say that even in the most difficult case, I have never failed to see some degree of progress.
You work in a field that is very difficult and one in which you need not only the support of your supervisors, but also of your peers. If everyone is not using the same basic methods across the board with each student, then some students will flounder.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you don't take anything your student does or not do personally. If you are doing your best, you are doing all you can do. When the day is over, go home and put your feet up and relax.~Donna

well my students are extremely anti-education but we are charged with teaching them basic skills and indipendent living skills (most of them dont see the need of washing). They are all A category prisoners in max security and we have government programmes to ensure adequate functional literacy, but there has to be a point when we admit there is nothing that can be done

Yes. I think spelling is one of them as I seem to have a mental block sometimes when it comes to putting the "i" before the "e" in some words.

I think everyone can be educated if they WANT TO LEARN. If kids are tuned out and not interested then I think education is almost impossible. However some students grasp concepts alot easier and some need that one on one support so they can develop their skills.

i think, crucialy if someone wants to learn generally they will. However, i do believe there are those who however far we wish it was otherwise will never learn howevwer much time we spend trying to get them to learn. Some of the men i work with can not tell the time, they are adults and we play with a large clock, they prefer couloring things in

As a teacher myself I would never give up in educating others.
It is my great pleasure when explaining a new concept to a person to see is eyes light up when at last he grasps the general meaning of what you are
saying.
Try the test on your grandchildren with Mathematics.

According to me you cannot teach anything to all the persons ! You need to know the fully about the person being taught. His/her interest may be in one thing, but his/her grasping power could be in a totally different field. You have to understand this and suitably choose the topic and method to educate. That way you can teach something to every person on this planet !

well there are people who have learning disabilities, so for them methods need to be adjusted.
But then there are people who just don't care, my boss is barely literate, his spelling is atrocious, his grammar is worse, he does not know the difference between 'know' & 'no', 'two', 'to' and 'too', and how about 'once' and 'wants'.
He actually wrote the word 'builded' for the work 'built' and when people point it out to him, he says he does not care, he can't be bothered to learn to write better.

There are people who really are not interested to be educated or to learn. It is really hard for the teachers on such kind of persons. But I think as a teacher, it is his/her goal to somehow make his/her students learn. The teacher may use different methods or approach to make the goal attainable.

i think everybody can be taught, its either they just dont want to be taught, or your methods is not effective in dealing with this kind of people. Somehow, you will need to think again of what ways you can get their attention and began to teach them little by little.
