Here in Oz, Mike, Todd, Susan, Bill & Mary aren't overly common - i mean they are but there are tonnes of other names that are used more often - Matt, Tom, John, Luke - stuff like that!
I think people who pick common names will go for them for a number of reasons - 1) they do actually like the name, 2) they cant agree on anything except the popular ones.
I gave my daughter a family name, after her 2 Great Nanna's & her Nanna - it was easy & we'd had it picked out well before we even though about having kids.
We're half way through pregnancy #2 & we're having a boy but there's just nothing we like so we could be waiting until near the due date before we find a name & can agree on it.

I am expecting in July and my boyfriend and I decided on two names, for a boy and girl. For the girl will be Jazmine and we are spelling it with a Z. And for the boy Marqus and instead of a C we are spelling it with a Q. We wanted to spell it as different as possible but let it be common as possible.

For me it would be a matter of a name that I cared about, liked, however I am also a lexigram'er so I would have to take this into consideration, since I have learned how meaningful a name can be, and how important it is to choose a name,
While over all I would prefer that the name be something different enough so that there are not say 10 lisa's in the class, or 8 Micheal's, but not so unusually that the child would be mocked.
Also the last name of the child would need to be considered. For example, someone wanted to name their child Thomas, however when they married their last name was Thomas. So I ended up meeting someone named Thomas Thomas.
Ok find you always wanted to name your child Thomas, but since the last name is Thoams, don't use it as first name.
Or to take an example from the movies, if you haven't watched Meet the Parents, the characters last name was Focker, he called himself Greg, but his name was "Gaylord" the short version of that is Gay Focker, and the parents of the woman realized that their daughter's middle name Martha would not go well with this last name.
While it is just a movie, unfortunately there are times when people do not realize that the names when put together kind of changes or creates an impression they don't want.
So those are things I would take into consideration.
