I studied English Literature and had no choice which books I read. I had a hard time getting into reading Gulliver's Travels. I had to read each book three times to know it really well. It has fours parts to it. Eventually I appreciated Jonathan Swift's satire and understood the meaning of the things he wrote about.
Have you ever had to read a book that you hated?
Do remember what it was and why you didn't like it?
Thanks

Don't think I have ever liked a book I was forced to read. At school I remember having to read 'MacBeth', 'the Long, the Short and the Tall' and 'Of Mice and Men' and can't say I liked any of them

I have been lucky enough never to have been forced to read a book. I thoroughly enjoyed Gullivers travels and have re-read it a couple of times and appreciated different aspects at different times. I feel that books are to be enjoyed not analysed and studying them often detracts from the enjoyment.

yeah, way back in college in my Political Dynamics Class, i had to read a three-inch thick collection of articles about Philippine Politics and Western Political Theories and related stuffs. of course, it was a pain to read very technical stuffs like that, but as i went through the book, i began to enjoy it even for quite a bit, it made me familiar of theories and intellectual things that i think only liberal arts students know.

It is very interesting. My major is electrical engineering. As we all know ,this major is very diffcult to learn . But i have to spend a lot of time reading professional books concerning the circuit and experiment .I hate the books i must read ,because i have no choice. Passing the examinations is first prioity !

Yes! I love to read so, reading and literature were my favorite classes growing up. But, while I can't remember the name of it, I did have one book I was forced to read that I hated every minute of. It is funny that you should ask this question because I was talking about it very recently and since then, I have been searching my brain trying to figure out what the heck the book was. I was not entirely fond of "A Tale of Two Cities" either. I liked the end. It was sad and unexpected but, getting there was really difficult.
The book that I hated, if memory serves, what about a Native American and, I think, his travels and drama. That is how bad it was for me. I can't even remember what it was about and how it ended. And, when I say I love to read, I am not just whistling Dixie...wow, did I really just use that phrase? Anyway, for me to hate a book is unusual. I have found a few books of late that I was not fond of but, I didn't actually hate them. I think I have selected to forget the name of the book that I had to read that made me want to tear my hair out because I don't want to believe that I could ever hate a book.
If I ever remember the title, I will try to find this post and get back to you about it!

I hate Shakespeare and I was fortunate enough to escape it at school, in actual fact we read a fantastic book Lord of The Flies which I thoroughly enjoyed and got right into, probably why I did so well in my exam. I haven't read Gulliver's Travels to be honest. There's never been a book I've had to read that I hated, well not that I can recall, it's all or nothing with me if I like something I will put 100% into reading it, if I hate it I am so stubborn that I refuse to get into it.

1984 by George Orwell. I had to read this for english in year 10 at high school. I couldn't even get past the first chapter. I think I only read about 4 or 5 pages. Needless to say, I failed all my assignments for this book, but I didn't care. I seemed to be the odd one out because everyone else in the class liked but they hated Wuthering Heights which I love. Oh well, each to their own.

We read an abridged version of "Gulliver's Travels" at school, and I didn't mind it, then once I'd left school, I read the complete unexpurgated version and was profoundly disturbed by its content...but by then I didn't have to read it!!!

I study Italian literature, so I have read some books that I don't like. When I have read a novel of Giovanni Verga, "I malavoglia", it was not very beautiful to read. Luckly I have read a lot of books that I like.

I actually have read a book that I hated before, which is surprising since I usually love reading. I think it was due in part to the fact that we were forced to read the book in school. One I hated was 'Macbeth', and I usually love Shakespeare. However, I think that I only hated it because of the way we had to read it, with all different types of literary strategies. Honestly, that type of thing ruins reading for me.
