Lent - What does it mean to you? Did you give something up?

I have always loved the Lenten season. There are a number of reason's personally but the primary reason is due to the way I percieve the whole premise of the Lent. For me it is a time of spiritual reflection, meditation, and a kind of purification, and purging of my thoughts and what is within the recesses of my mind and in with my heart. It helps me to draw closer to the God of my understanding and enables me to become a better human being I hope.
I don't really think of it as a time to give something up, though I did give up coffee and am on my fifth day without the old Java...which I dearly love. But being an all or nothing type of personality I can't just cut back.
The truth is though I gave coffee up not because of Lent I gave it up but because I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and so I have committed to making this small life style change. So I am feeling better about that and physically feeling better already. Heck I even started walking again. Change my thinking and I will change my life I believe.
I am grateful and glad that the two things coincided, Lent and my giving up coffee, just makes it all abit easier..
I made the attempt to get a substitute for coffee...but that didn't work out so good; a Ovaltine like substance called of all things " Horlicks". Totally gross! Don't buy this those of you giving up coffee. So I am sticking to herb tea and will buy something closer to a coffee substitute on my trip to town.
I wanted to know what Lent means to others and wondered if they gave something up for Lent? Namaste

Hi The first thing I ask my self is this biblical or not? If not then you are just following traditions of the men not YHWH God. I prefer to stick to what YHWH God say`s in the bible HOSEA 6:6 For I desire mercy not sacrifice,And the knowledge of YHWH God more than burnt offerings. So I do not follow man I am a true seeker of the truth YHWH and the son YASHUA. YHWH bless you I ask in the name Yashua the only name that name can be saved by. ACTS 4:12
