For the past couple of days I was hearing these strange noises that I couldn't figure out. Then I recalled the red Maple I have out front & remembered the woodpeckers I have in it often. Now I have not heard of woodpeckers at the trees in the winter before now. I took this photo tday noticing newly bared areas on the bark. So I now know the woodpeckers have been around hungrily looking for some food. I am going to get a suet feeded this spring to feed them daily. The whole front of this tree is nearly nude from woodpeckers. The tree is past repair as it was this way 4 years ago when we bought the house so I leave it alone. The two I have seen are the Redheaded typical species some with a black mask like area around their eyes. Unknown what typwe that one is. I have another discussion with a photo of the black type. Anyhow do you have trees that are frequently visited by woodpeckers? Do you even have woodpeckers in your area?
