My fiance' with her income tax she bought me a new Dell Inspiron 5100 wireless laptop. And a new WRT54G wireless router, I can't beleive she did still today, and many day's to come. I've been on the Net now for only 12 yrs. and I love it, I make some money every month with PTC's & PTR's but not enough to brag about. I know she meant well and I love the laptop & router but; Isnt it suppose to be when you take the laptop outside out of reach of the router, It is suppose to pick-up wireless signal's? When I'm at home it work's great I can go anywhere in the house and it even goes up to 400 ft. from the house if I wanted to. I know it can do it, when at home it pick's up (2) linksys routers, (1) netgear router, and (1) Brenny router, in the Dell wireless lan card utility. Is there anyone out there to help me, PLEASE

You will only pick up wireless signals if there is wireless where you go. For example, if you go to McDonalds, they don't have wireless, but if you go to Starbucks they do, so you would get wireless internet there. Right now it sounds like you are picking up your neighbors unsecured wireless internet.

A lot of cities are getting fully wired so you shouldn't have a problem connecting when you go outside. A lot of coffee shops, bookstores, libraries even McDonalds have hot spots so it's easy to connect. Some places you need to register and put in a password to connect to their network but it's not a big deal. Some places you can't connect outside at all it's just hit or miss. When you're outside you shouldn't need any other equipment the laptops now a days have everything you need to just plug it in and connect. Is this what you are asking or maybe I misunderstood the question?
