Make hair grow faster: tips, old wives' tales, effective products?

I'm growing my hair out longer and I'm doing all the typical things stylists recommend: regular trims, minimal chemicals and heat, etc. Has anyone ever heard of anything else that helps? I've heard people suggest everything from crushing up birth-control pills and adding it to your shampoo/conditioner to getting your hair trimmed on a full moon. Have you tried something that you've noticed worked (or definitely didn't)?
