With my 18th Bday coming up in June, I'm starting to think about a lot of "adult" things, and credit cards is one of them. When did you get your first one? Do you need anything [e.g. a job or certain amount of savings money] to get one? Any tips? Please &thanks.

I would not get a credit card unless you have a job. Just get a card with a low interest rate that you can get approved for $300. Use it to buy gas and pay it off as soon as you get the bill. This will help you build the credit you need.

i got my first credit card when i got my third job. i have more than five credit cards. wow can you imagine it? unfortunatelly i was not responsibile person in using credit card. on the first time, i did't pay full of my using balance in credit card. although i capable to pay it fully, and it generated to very bad behaviour of my usage. in last, i got so many debt caused of credit card :( it was nightmare on me. at this moment, i just cut every credit card that i have and trying to pay my debt. i prefer to use debit card rather than credit card and trying more wisely in my expenditure budget!

You really should have a job first before you get a credit card. and my advice is to keep it just for emergencies. You end up payign so much interest on things that you might as well have saved up the money to buy it cause you pay triple what the price tag was by the time you pay the card off!
I got one with my second job, and i was doing fine with it, paying it all off at the end of each month till i moved in with my bf at the time, and he started using it and saying i'll pay this back on it and never did. now its in collections for a good 3000$... which isnt that bad, but i dont have a job so it'll never get paid and the longer it sits there the more interest builds on it and the worse my credit gets!

A credit card will help you to establish credit, which is important in the "adult world". You usually need a job, how else will you be paying for the credit card? I don't think they look at your savings. THey just want to make sure you have money so you can pay for the card.
Then...only use it for emergencies or just enough to pay it off. My first credit card, I got at 18...and I only ever used it to buy gas. Mind you it'll also be a very slim credit limit...like $200 or the like.

I think I got my first one when I was 25 years old. I filled out an application and had a job which is a requirement and having a few hundered dollars in the bank for a few months helps. But sweetie, let me tell you, use the card ONLY for emergencies or you'll get so far into debt and never see the light at the end of the tunnel. Credit cards are SO easy to get into trouble with but on the other hand, one needs them to build credit. It's a terrible cycle. Another thing is to pay it off every month. Say you charged $50., when you get your statement, pay it off so it shows that you're very responsible. My husband and I have such perfect credit that anywhere we go, we're commented about it and they say "We've not seen such great credit in a long time!" It's really nice to hear that, ya know? lol

When I first started college I got my first 'student' credit card....
Tips... pay it off every month, don't buy what you don't have the money for, use it for security not for money you don't have, don't get one with an annual fee, don't ever do cash advances...
Stay smart and you will be OK
Thanks
Zelo

I got my first one when I was 18 and working at my first job. I was not smart with it tho. Its good to have one and establish credit for yourself. Use it to buy your gas and then pay it off each month. Do not buy stuff you think you have to have. Trust me! BTDT!!!

I got my first credit card when I started working for about a year and that was from citibank. I'm not sure but I think it depends on your income for they wouldn't want to approve your application if you cant afford to pay your bills and such. My mom gave me a supplementary card when i was studying in the UK though because at that time i couldnt afford to have a card of my own.

I got my first credit card after I moved out of the house and had my first job. You will have to have a job to get a credit card as you have to show the credit card company how you plan on paying the bill. Be carful with credit cards they can get you into trouble.

hey~
i also got my first one when i was 18, and like so many others, i made some mistakes (a few that are just now finally fixed 8 years later) but i also got ride of credit cards and bills (cell fone etc) for about 4 years, then got a new cell and a new card....and have been being btr with it.
my suggestion, don't spend what u cant repay....and look for a reasonable apr%....the lower the btr (for sure not above 17-18%)

I was not very excited about getting a credit card. In fact I didn't do anything to get it, it came to my feet :)
I am a student at university so there are some campaigns about credit cards for us and the limit is very little but they don't ask for any saving or any job cuz you are a student. One day one of them asked me if I would like one, and I said no, and he said it won't charge me anything and there are advantages of being a student and then I accepted, he did everything and I got my card :)
it is not a great thing though

I got my first credit card at 18 when I first entered college. I got it through a joint account with my dad, though. I still remember the credit limit was only $500. I tell you, it was really easy to go over the limit 'cos it was so convenient to keep using it without even keeping track of how much I had spent. But that's not a good thing. You can ruin your credit rating before you even have a chance to build it.
I don't think you need to have a job to get a credit card. If your credit rating is good, you'll get lots of pre-approved credit card offers. Some of them do require a minimum amount of income but not necessarily from a job.

I got my first credit card when I went to college at 17 (almost 18). My Dad co-signed for it (as most "student" cards will let you do) because I didn't have a job at the time. My dad wanted me to have it to start building a credit history for the future. The card was only for buying textbooks or if there was an emergency. My parents strongly believe in not carrying a balance on a credit card, so the bill was sent to my parents house so they knew I wasn't abusing the card.
Basically, don't every buy something on the card that you can't pay for at the end of the month. It is really easy to build up a balance on a card, but much harder to pay it down. If you don't have much will power, just leave the card at home.

I got my first credit card when I was 19 because I was going overseas and didn't want to take a lot of money with me. Make sure you look at the APR, and you really shouldn't have to get one that charges an annual fee. Mine has a 2% cash back and I like that fine. My first credit card didn't have that, but it was a good one nonetheless. I just made sure to check around. You do need a checking account, but you probably have that.

I got my first credit card when I started work in 1990. The credit limiit for the card at that time was only RM 2000, which is about $600. I still keep and use the card until today and to date they have increased my credit limit to RM 20000, which is about $6000... My income at that time was only RM 1500 per month, which was about $400.
