The best advice I could give you is to take your time when it comes to getting close to people online. The problem with dating sites is that people on them tend to push a romantic relationship immediately, instead of getting to know someone well first.
I met my husband in a chat room that wasn't explicitly for dating, but just a place for college kids to hang out. We started talking in August if I remember right, and I remember calling him on the phone quite a few times by winter. By spring, I was starting to feel that I might want to be involved with him as something other than friends, and it was in May that I wound up moving here to be with him. There were a lot of circumstances that rushed that decision a little, but I had still known him for many months by that time.
I work at a bank, so I see the results of those sorts of scams all the time when it comes to my customer's finances. Usually, from what my customers tell me, they allowed themselves to be rushed into a romantic relationship over a short period of time, and then wound up being scammed because they trusted the person too quickly. I haven't heard of too many scammers that are willing to just talk to you and be your friend for a long time before asking for more.
