How involved are you with your children's schools?

I have been involved since my oldest was in kindergarden. I was preggo at the time with my second. Thought I was going to get a break after getting one in school and BAM, we were blessed with our second. So the entire school year I was pregnant, off subject = SORRY.
I started volunteering in pre-k and K doing projects for the teachers at home. Cutting, sorting, pasting, you name it anything to help the teacher out.
First grade I was room mom and loved it. Plus my youngest now has her older sister's first grade teacher. It is so cool because her teacher can comment I remember when . . . .
Second grade I helped out with a little book club the kids had. It was a lot of fun.
Third grade and fourth grade again room mom and copy mom. Plus I was not getting involved with PTA since my youngest was getting older and starting pre-k 1/2 day.
Fifth grade I slacked off some during the day because I started working but was still involved with PTA and helping out at all the events, etc.
We have moved up and I now have one child in two different schools. My PTA duties will be done in the elementary school this year but next year I will still be involved in some capacity and will be working more in the middle school.
My point is that you if you can give one hour a week or one hour a month to your child's classroom, school or PTA you will make a difference.
I know a lot of people are afraid to step forward and help with PTA because they feel they will be sucked up into a lot. You can if you don't be careful. It happened to me and it became so overwhelming. One year I was chairing 4 different committees and had to make a choice between PTA or my family. This year I cut back to two and next year I will be just volunteering to help out at activities.
Then you hear people complain that it is the same ole people running the show. Well someone has to and if no one steps up who is going to. If no one steps up, who looses our kids. So the next time you are at an event and it's near the end, don't run out the door, take 5 - 10 minutes and offer to help close out the event. You will not be turned away, plus then everyone can go home at a reasonable house.
On the plus side you might even make some new friends. I have made such wonderful friendships with moms and dads whose common goal was to help out their child's school.
If you don't want to help with PTA, talk to your childs teacher. If you ever look through your child's bookbag and see lots of copied worksheets 9 out of 10 times the teacher had to make time in their busy day to make copies. Teachers have lives too. Their day isn't finished just because the bell rang.
I try to pop in at least once a week to see if a teacher needs copy. I start with our current teacher, if she has nothing I stop by teachers we have had in the past. I can usually find something to help them with. They really do appreciate it.
Sorry for the soapbox but our children's education is something very important to all of us.

I know I'm not commenting from the position of a parent but here none of the schools I've attended ever wanted parents to get involved in these things. The schools here only want parents to meet and see how good or bad grades their children get. And that is usually where it ends. I think that parents here couldn't get involved even if they wanted. Maybe it's bad...

Wow, it was interesting to hear from you. Our your schools private or public. Here public schools are run by each individual county then private schools are usually associated with a church.

I agree with you whole heartedly. My child is in pre-school currently. This morning before going into work my husband went to her class and participated in the class activity. We take turns at this. And Just an hour ago I got off the phone with the elementary school principal. I had scheduled a meeting with her. I won't be able to switch appointments to attend the kindergarten "Roundup" She starts kindergarten in August. My husband and I will be very involved!!

Good for you!
I had a friend who use to do lunchroom duty, just helping the kindergartens open their milks, different food items, etc. She stated doing this because her daughter who was in K would not eat lunch, so she would come up every day for an hour to keep an eye on her and help out.
There is so much a parent can do to help out. I had one friend who came in once a week for kindergarden and would clean the art center. One less thing for the teacher to do.

Hi Kim,
I was involved when she was in school. lol I was there from day one (pre school) whenever they needed help. I made sure all the teachers knew that if they needed a room mom or just needed help, they could call me and I would be there. Always went on field trips, baked for their fairs, you name it, I was there.
I know some parents are busy working and can't really be there as much, but want to and try, and I also know some who don't work at all and don't want to be bothered and that is a huge problem.
It shows the kids that the parents don't care so why should they do well in their studies.

I agree with you.
Last night we had our Ice Cream Social/Book Fair and besides the regulars from the PTA Executive Board and our teachers I saw one new parent helping out. This was such a huge success. Our principal walked out of his office and saw the huge line of people waiting to get their ice cream and just smiled. It was unbelievable! It is good for the kids to come out and spend quality time with their parents.
Now if we could just get some new faces!!!

I agree teachers need our help. They just dont have the time to get it all done by them selves and still take a good interest in teaching our children. I am at my sons school about 2 to 3 times a week helping out. I want my kids to know I care about their education and this is one way I can show them.

You are so right.
Plus I think parents forget that our teachers are also still continuing their educations, and in some parts of the country working a second job to help pay for their studies, plus they have their own families.

I was always involved with my daughters' schools, I had two daughters, 6 years apart, so double duty, but I loved being active in the schools. When my youngest was in pre-k and my oldest was in 6th grade, they were in the same school, I had my own by-line in the local paper titled 'Elementary, My Dear'. I had a blast covering all the events in all the grade levels. My biggest fans were retired teachers that loved reading what was going on in the elementary school. I stayed involved all the way through to graduation. We were involved in Junior rodeos and in the 4-H programs from the time my youngest was in 1st grade. She won junior showmanship her first year, and senior showmanship her senior year, it was great. I helped out with the teachers when they needed help, I was a substitute teacher for a year at the elementary level, and junior high level, I loved it.
I agree, get involved, even if you don't have kids, schools can always use an extra hand and an involved adult.

Hats off to you!!!
I am a current substitute teacher and love it. I have had so many people in the schools suggest I go back to school to get my teaching certificate. It has been 20 years since I walked into college, so it is a little intimating to me.

I am involved in my children's school just not to the extent that you are. You need to have your state and federal child abuse clearances before you are allowed to go past the front office at my kids school so the number of people who were willing to take the time and pay the money to get their clearances are few.
I signed up to help with holiday parties and things of that nature but now since there are only like 4 parents on my 1st graders list and like 6 on my kindergarteners list I find myself being called in to do something atleast 2-3 times a month.
It's okay though. I love being able to spend the time with my kids and their friends and I enjoy watching them learn new things and have fun.

I have slowed down in the past couple of years, only because I am working.
What state do you live in that you need clearances? Here in Maryland you do have to sign into the school, once you are buzzed in. I do have my clearances since I am an board of education employee, which I kinda of like that.
I love being in the schools, that is why I started subbing. My youngest loves it when I am working in her school because I try to have lunch with her. Plus you get to meet their little friends, which is a good thing.
I went to the middle school for American Education week and had to apologize to the science teacher because when I walked in I disrupted her class with all the kids saying hello, between teaching some and watching the others grow up since Kindergarden. But that is okay I would rather know the kids.

I totally agree with you here kim... I was Always involved in my kids grade school... then on to middle/junior high...
but now... that the babies... are in High school... the schools don't even want you around... lol I guess there really isn't much for me to do there! LOL
basically it is just helping with raising money... and I am not really into raising the money part... i was always into the copying and craft project stuff...
I am really glad that you started this... would like to see how others are involved!

Me and my wife are very much involve in that matter. WE see to it taht we guide them in the best possible way when it comes to studies. We believe it is really important and couldn't be left unattended.
