Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets is now out of the season. With a record of 37-20 how will Houston survive this? They can make it to the playoff. I know Coach Rick Adelman his players determination and play. What is your comment?

They're really short on quality big men now that Yao Ming is out. They'd have to start Dikembe Mutombo at center, but at his age he won't be able to stay too long on the court. Luis Scola, their rookie who has been starting at power forward may have to spend some time at the five position just to compensate for Yao's absence. Steve Novak will split time with them at that position, and Chuck Hayes who's also set at the power forward position may also have to do the same thing.
The thing is that if the Houston Rockets want to survive the first round of the playoffs in the very tough Western Conference, they'd need to acquire a big man from the free agency, perhaps Dale Davis (formerly with the Detroit Pistons). They've already missed out on Jamaal Magloire and Theo Ratliff, and if they're serious about a run for the gold, they need to get some form of reinforcement and fast.

Just an update, it has been reported that Yao Ming has opted to undergo surgery to repair the stress fracture in his foot. The process involves placing screws around the bone to hold it together, and should have the Houston Rockets starting center recovered (if everything goes according to plan) in four months' time.
That would place his date of return to play at early July, merely a month before the Olympics in Beijing. The injury and the surgery will probably not, however, keep Yao from playing for China during the said games.
