Do you discuss politics at work?

If you discuss politics at work, do your co-workers shun you when they find out your affiliation? I work with a great bunch of people. It seems a majority of them are on the opposite side of the spectrum than I am. However, we will do a friendly bashing on myspace, or even "derogatory" remarks against each other.. all in fun. My question is how do you deal with politics at work (usually politics, religion, and s*x are all generally taboo) and your co-workers reactions when they find out "who you really are?"

In the office I use to work we didn't discuss politics much but I do remember one girl that worked there that seemed to talk about it quite a bit. When she found out I was voting differently she kept bringing it up and tried to sway me. I didn't talk about it cause I knew how she felt. She was a little pushy.

Cases like yours are a shame. Other people shouldn't try to talk you into what they believe. They should be open minded and listen, if they don't agree. Than's OK. I feel there is no reason we shouldn't be able to get along with people just because our party affiliations aren't the same. Too bad your co-worker is so pushy and close minded

when i was working (which was b4 i got into politics) i had many conversations about religion and everyone thinks differant. Im non religious but i like to see what everyone follows or ask questions that are hard to answer. I asked one time what happened to all the indians that didnt hear about jesus and i was told that they all went to hell LMAO what a god to condemn people that didnt even have a chance. Other than that i dont talk politics often b/c the people i hang around arnt into it and roll there eyes and ignore me b/c they dont want to talk about it. so I dont get to talk about it unless its on here.

Its a shame some people are close minded and can't listen to, the respect people for their beliefs. If we could all be open and HEAR what people have to say, we may actually find out that there is not much difference. In the end.. we all want one thing..... to be happy Thanks for responding

Yes we discuss politics at work and I also receive mix responses from my co-worker. But this is human nature as two people are not same so how can their views be the same. So don't get disheartend because there always be people against you. So take it as a challenge and try to overcome it. Be positive and everything around you will also be positive. Thanks for reading my response. Goodbye

I am not disheartened at all. I welcome the different viewpoints, although, of course I do not always agree with them. Like I said in my opening post.. our discussions are usually very friendly. We know each others personalities.. when we've gone to far, and when to stop. So we don't ever really hurt each others feelings. We have fun Party bashing" each other.. making fun of each other when somebody says something that could show that persons polital beliefs (oh you are such a (Insert party affiliation here)_________! But it is always good natured.. and we do not stop talking to each other just because we think differently Thank you for responding. ")

I don't think that discussing politics at work is such a good idea. I am a stay at home mom but when I did work outside the home and people would try to discuss politics with me, I'd get a little angry. That was mainly because they would get angry with me if I didn't agree with them. I am the sort of person who doesn't change my beliefs to suit anyone. There's a lot of people who get offended if you don't think like they do.

It is human nature to disagree with someone. However, sometimes people take it too far when the other does not agree. Some people fail to realize that it is BECAUSE we disagree, we are different, THAT'S what makes the world go 'round. Also, through disagreement, comes change. If someone doesn't like something, we find ways to make changes that appeal to most everybody.. BUT because we are all different.. there is NO WAY to please everyone... thus starts this vicious cycle. But thats what makes this country great! Thank you for your views and bless you for staying at home with your children. It's not easy.. but in the long run it will be well worth it :)

I had to catch a ride with someone I like to hang around with at work and he said we need to switch on O Rieley on the radio (conservative talk show host). I was thinking: cool, I really like listening to him! But then the guy started go into a long lecture how the right distorts the truth and is destroying the country. I am thinking, hmm, this guy's view is so twisted. Least to say I found some new people to hang around with.

Its a shame that we can't all just get along. A majority of the people I work with seen to be for the "other" party. We do a friendly debate.. then have fun and party bash each other, then go to lunch. We don't try to sway each other to come to the "other" side, for we have worked together for so long.. we know better. I tend to get along with everyone, no matter what their political views or other views and values they might hold that are different from my own. I hope eventually, you might be able to accept him as a friendly acquaintance in the future

I love talking about politics especially now with the primaries going on. Just keep it simple or talk to someone you know has the same affiliation as you. It's a very interesting topic and the historical implications with this years' candidates, makes it even more tempting to talk about. I,m really excited about the whole dynamic.

It is great to see others share a passion for poilitics. You are correct about the historical implications. It will be a VERY interesting election this year. Thank you for responding. What everyone seems to be missing in my original posts is that the discussions/debates are friendly.. most everyone my office is of opposite party affiliation than I . I don't have a problem talking to them vice-versa its always friendly and we have fun poking fun at each other for our political beliefs.. I guess what I am seeing here is no one is friendly enough with their co-workers to have debates, and still be friends.

Well, around where I work, it seems to be an everyday occurance it seems. Someone is always talking Politics, and there are a lot of different views and such. But I find a lot of the people agree and want it to come down exactly to the President I would like to see in 2009 as well. I feel when you choose to cut down and make derogatory remarks like this, you are not basing them on the real Facts, and you need to watch what you say unless you can back up your proof, as the real Truth is hopefully what will seem to win in the end.

It's all in fun where I work. The "derogatory" marks are done jokingly and affectionately. This is the reason I started this topic, was to find out ahow many work environments were like mine. It seems there are not too many. Hopefully we will get a great president.

I attempt to stay away from politics at work. I find that a lot of the time, the world of politics drives a wedge between people. When it is brought up, I have no problem discussing it, but I never actually start debating. Working in sales, I have to be very careful about what I do and don't say.

I can imagine that being in sales, you REALLY have to walk on eggshells, especially when the topic is something a volatile as politics. Maybe it depends on the type of place one works in and how close you are to your co-workers Interesting Tahnk you

we discuss politics at work but I have not experienced any "shunning" as a result of it. I am a very strong woman with very strong opinions so I think there was no great shock to people to learn that I am voting for Hillary. Many of my coworkers are as well. I live in Texas and our primary is next week so the topic of the election is huge right now. We do have a couple of Obama supporters but there is no backlashing from anyone because of our viewpoints.

I guess when everyone is on the same "side" so to speak, its not so bad. You are at least voting for the same party. Thanks for weighing in. I am glad you and others are voting.

I am working in a government agency. I talk about politics with my close co-workers freely. But we don't talke about my boss. Sometimes politics is very sensitive and can pull you into trouble when you talk about it with an unsuitable person.

It it friendly? Are any of you a different party association than the others?? If so.. do they give each other "h*ll" over it? My group of co-workers that I can make fun of are mostly younger than I. In their 20's. We have worked together for a long time. We do things together. We are a close knit bunch. I guess age might have to do something to do with it too as whether or not you can "party bash" and still be friends
