I'm gathering information on homeschooling and wondering whether it works out for kids beginning at the high school level. I'd be interested to hear both the good and bad alike.

I would never choose to homeschool my kids unless we lived in a really bad school district and couldn't afford private school. I do not think homeschooling is bad, but I have such great memories of high school. I was involved in band, show choir, softball, cross country, and many other activities. I would have missed out on so much if I were homeschooled. I know there are opportunities for homeschooled kids to be involved in activities and meet other homeschooled kids, but it would not be the same as getting to see your friends everyday without parents around. I married my high school sweetheart 2 years ago and we have a beautiful 8 month daughter. That would not have happened if I had been homeschooled.

I respect your decision, but I think your reasons are way off-base. I was homeschooled, and I was in so many more activities than I ever had available in public school. Also, because we saw the same homeschoolers at these activities, we all saw our friends every day. Also, we were separate from our parents during a lot of these activities. The only thing my mom stayed for was gymnastics, and that was because it was too far away to drive home. That was her time away from the kids, and our time away from the parents. :)

I was homeschooled, and I adored it. But it's only worth it if you make the effort to be very involved in helping them get the best education they can get. A lot of my friends had a miserable time when they were homeschooled and it's because their parents used homeschooling as an excuse to escape something in public school, not to get the best education they could.
