Do You Try/Like to Repair Your Computer?

I have been working with computers since 97. I wasn’t confident playing with my machine let alone try repairing it, when it got some problem. But, I figured that if I always depend on others, I’ll not have close relationship with my machine and will be wasting a lot of my money that can otherwise be saved. So, in short, I started dealing with ‘soft’ problems (software problems) and then with ‘hard’ (hardware) ones too. I am not an expert though, in any of two, but I do have intermediate working knowledge. Now when I look back, I feel satisfied about how much I saved just by learning to deal with the problems. My Question(s): Do you try to deal with your PC’s problems yourself or always look for a technician to fix it for you? Have you ever saved your lot? How did you feel about both, the experience and the saving?

I had a friend who would help me fix my computer, but I don't just let him fix it, I learn from him. Now, when I run into any problems, I am confident enough to figure out the problem and fix it if it can be helped. I would say that I have saved a lot of money just by knowing how a computer works. I don't have to deal with a technician that would ask for a very high unreasonable payment because he just "looked at" my computer and say that I need to replace something. My dad is into electronics, he can repair any home appliance, but I am proud of myself because the computer is the only thing he cannot mess with :D

I appreciate your desire to learn for yourself, onewickedsoul! and your efforts to try dealing with your computer issues at your own. Yes, it would be too costly a repair if it is just about looking at the system and telling the problem. So, now that you can deal with your computer, your household self sufficiency in electronics is achieved. I am glad for you! Thanks for sharing!:-)

yes I have the same knowledge about computer hardware is the letters by whenever there is a problem with my computer which is harder related at first I give it a try. And as then I feel that he is the problem which has occurred raised out of my reach then I go to any person who can repair it. This is the reason why even when three of my friends and relatives have problem with their computer they also call me for help and I am very glad to do that. Frank is picking in today's world it is very important that you have some basic knowledge about computer hardware is so that you can let their small problems. I have seen a lot of times that is people call engineers for even small problems like misplacement of RAM or in a loose wires and for that they had to pay at least a hundred bucks. Which is not at all a good thing according to meet. Every single cent you earn is harder and money and so you should never give it away easily.

Hello amitavroy! You seem to have pretty good working knowledge of computers which is really appreciated. It's a shame and a burden on pocket that people can't do even the basic things. Gee! I have a friend, his nephew, nearly 8 years old, can replace RAM, can change jumper settings, screw and unscrew discs etc. It's good that your relatives and friends can seek your help, especially when it's free of cost!:-) Thanks for sharing!:-)

i usually deal with problems that are software based as iam more interested in software than hardware. I rarely deal with hardware as if anything goes wrong with the hardware then the comp is doomed whereas in software if something goes wrong there is always a choice of reinstalling.

Hello anshnav, You are very right that software problems are always safe enough to deal with, hardware can be tricky. But, I have seen that people can mess even with software issues especially when they try to deal with registry, But then, as you said, it can be reinstalled! Thanks for sharing!:-)

i am also interested in software.when I started to use a new software,I always try by myself without anyone's help.my college student always ask me for help on computer problems.i sometimes read computer magezines to increase my computer knowlege. But i think it is boreing when computer do not work,it may influence your work and study. So i incline to save immediately after installing ,then when problems come,it is easy to solve.

I always try to see if I could fix the problem first now that I have some slight idea on what to do when it comes to problems with computers. Before, I use to bring the whole CPU at the house of someone whom my friend referred me to. I simply looked at how he did the maintenance and from there, I simply tried it myself when our new computer was bought. Now I am the one who always tries to fix problems when it comes to computers. Only customer-easy software problems though. Not the deep technical stuff. Now, I am trying to see if I could fix the video card of our previos one by replacing the exhaust fan. Look back, I simply could say that I'm impressed of what I was able to do as well as the money that I could set aside

Hello ratyz5!:-) Trying on ideas is an interesting enterprise; satisfying, fulfilling and full of enjoyment. I, too, practice the way of learning that you described in your response and I call it induced knowledge!:-) It is already appreciable that you try fixing software related problems. And, not everyone can deal with all the deep technical stuff, if one doesn't belong to the field, at least I can't! I am impressed too about how you evolved and saved for yourself a sum! Oh, and best of luck with the video card! Thanks for sharing!:-)

i've been working with computer since i was 2nd year high school(1993) and its was 286 to 386 model back then lols ^_^. i had a lot of experience in computer but i still consider my self as an advance user not an expert because computer evolution is still growing fast and there is still a lot to learn about. So far i been watching how computer hardware getting better and better, faster and faster. And for software, ive been moving from DOS to Windows to LINUX(i think i'll longer in this OS ^_^).

Hello merjun, I too actually started back in 1995 with a 486 but got the proper one in 97 (Pentium 1). And, you are right, no one who is not from the field can really call oneself expert. It's a whole world in itself changing, as you say, at quick pace. I have used Linux only for work. They have made GUI a lot more better than what it used to be few years ago but it's still rather difficult to use compared to Windows but it's relatively safe. I guess, it has more to do with the fact that around 90% computer users are using Windows so naturally it is more vulnerable to attacks. Plus, the base code matters, windows has easier to get into! Thanks for sharing!:-)

Initially i always used to call in for services to tackle any problem in my computer, infact i had an annual contract for the same but slowly i tried to tackle problems on my own and soon i was able to set software problems in order and i then started downloading programs from download.com to tackle problems and would read the discussion forum too. This helped me a lot and now i manage most of the problems unless i need to add something new like a server which is not possible at my end as this needs specialized software. I have done some work on hardware too.

It's good to know that now you can handle most of 'soft' problems and can deal some hardware problems too. By going to forums, downloading programs for yourself and trying to troubleshoot, you have a perfect way to climb the ladder! Thanks for sharing!:-)

I try to deal with my PC problems. I rarely call a PC technician. Why would I call a PC Technician to fix my computer, when I have a wonderful guide that can help me fix it on my own called the Internet. It is a waste of money to me calling PC Technicians because even if it was a simple error, they will still charge you fully. There is no point in that. Before I call a PC technician (which I haven't in the past nine years), I will make sure I have exhausted all my options or possibilities. I would at least try to fix it. Besides, most of the time, when I get a computer problem and I fix it on my own, I learn something new. The more knowledge I have about computers means the less I have to pay in PC technician's pockets.

Hello superjockh, Welcome to mylot, I hope you would be enjoying your experience here!:-) You have a good point about wonderful guide called internet. There is a lot of info available for free now and it's shame that if someone can't use it. I'll also be inclined to call a technician only and only after I have exhausted all my options and tries to fix the problem. I didn't have to do it in ages though. I have also observed that when someone develops a working understanding of these machines, one seems to have less problems, probably one is unconsciously keeping things in order or maybe doesn't pay attention as problems get resolved easily. Thanks for sharing!:-)

Yes, to answer your question, I do deal with my own PC's problems... And most of the time, its hardware problems that I faced and I have to replace the parts to ensure the PC works again like before... It is always frustrating when a PC fail to operate smoothly and too much time is wasted to find out what's wrong with it

Yes, I do repair my computer, both hardware and software, and I quite enjoy it ;) When I was younger, I was asking a lot of questions to my uncle, who is a computer expert, and he taught me many things. After I grew older and I got an Internet connection, I surfed different web sites and forums to ask questions. As for the money, I can't say I saved much, because, back in the day, my uncle was repairing my computer for free, the only thing I saved was time, because he is a very busy man, so if I got my computer to him, I had to call him every day to remind him and ask him about my PC's health :P , but now I fix the PC myself ;)

I do Kamran, of course you know that I now work in a computer repair shop for a good friend of mine right? I do virus malware clean ups, software resolutions and I can now put together a pretty mean desktop. It was not always so however. I got my first computer in 1998, I knew nothing about them what so ever. I did alot of typing in nursing school but that was on an old sears typewriter. Like you I could not afford techs, so I had to teach myself everything including how to use windows, and microsoft office. I bought the dummy books used from the campus book store and like everything else in my life I dug in. I truly enjoyed the challenge.

I many not understand all of the technical mumbo jumbo that goes along with motherboards and processors but I sure know who they fit together and what makes them work or not work together. If I had it to do over again I do believe I would have gone into IT. I have always thought my calling was nursing I do not regret that at all. hi kamran! ^__^ i get problems with my computer once in a while. if its just a simple problem, i would try to fix it. like, a program wouldn't run or some files keep hanging up. but if its something like my monitor wouldn't start or the cpu wouldn't boot, i would take it to a technician because i don't really know anything about computers, even softwares or anything as big as that, so i can't really do anything except to bring it to a technician. sometimes i'm wishing that i had studied computers, everything about it even programming, because its really a hassle when my computer breaks down and i have to take it to a technician to repair it. not only is it a hassle and consumes a lot of time and energy but yes, it is also a burden to my pocket. but i can't really do anything about it because i don't have the patience to learn everything about fixing and stuffs. so i just take the best of care of my computer to prevent it from having problems. ^__^

Yes, it would be great if we could just learn everything, but humans have limits, one should just try to take best out of one's time and should keep learning new things always! I am not one of those techies who buy all the parts of a computer and put the whole system up from the ground. I usually buy an assembled system from the shop. But having used two PCs in my home for more than 10 years now, I have come across many problems that can happen to the machine, whether it is hardware-related, OS or application-related. If I had to call in a serviceman each time I hit a problem, I would either have spent a whole lot of money for diagnosis and repair, or I would have been crippled umpteen times (in not having the problem PC to use until it is rectified). Knowing something about PC and how it works is really essential and very worthwhile. I've picked up this knowledge over the years tickering with my previous PCs. I was also in the IT line, so I have friends who can also advise me when I needed help. That is really a big advantage. Many times, I get application problems, OS issues or harddisks that won't read or have difficulty reading after some usage, and I have to get another harddisk and reinstall the whole system. Recently, my PC wouldn't boot, and I realised that the cooling fan was not working very well causing the CPU to shut down quickly, so I just went to the shop to buy a replacement fan and installed it myself. Other times, some peripheral will stop working well and I have to reinstall the driver again. There are many other things that can go wrong with a PC. Knowing how to do simple diagnosis and fixing your own problems really help one to get the PC up and running much quicker than waiting for external help. One of the things I never like doing is to bring my PC to the shop for repair. I never like the idea of leaving my PC with a repairman who may just copy my data and confidential information without me knowing. I am very wary about this breach of privacy to my data. So in this regard, I force myself to learn how to fix problems on my own especially those that are linked to fixing the hard-disk, or if I need to upgrade my system. In all my years of using PC, I have only brought my PC to the shop twice, once when the power supply unit failed and the other when the mother board had a problem. I have also helped several of my friends resolve their PC problems. They really appreciate me lending them a hand and giving them advice, because calling the agent to do those things would have cost them a bundle.

Hello lexus54, Assembling everything together would probably be difficult for me too, it is not impossible though! You are very right about the time lag involved with asking for a tech's help. We all learn in steps with experiences and it's good that you don't hesitate to ask for friends help for things you don't know. One of my friends spent a lot wastefully just because he didn't have confidence and didn't let us fix his system either, but he got better with time! Thank you for sharing all those experiences, you seem to have right tone and attitude to learn with experience!
