It depend on the kid. If your kid show some intresse when you cook or bake why don´t let them help you? My 2,5 year old son like to bake and he is allways helping me when I bake... He is not intressted in cooking yet, but my 13 and 15 year old children are cooking one day each on a week, they do simple cooking but so far I haven´t had a fire in the kitchen yet lol......

My own kids started cooking at about 5 years old. If they aren't accident prone and have an interest why not.I have a friend that has her sons cooking eggs and hash browns and the oldest is 6 and the next one is 5. She is right there to see that nothing happens. Girls were having to cook back in the old days, before gas and electric stove, with a wood cook stove. They had to even start the fire in order to cook. What will we ever do if there isn't electricity or gas for cooking or heat.

I, too, think it depends on the kid. If he/she has no interest, it's hard to teach them much about it. Sometimes they will develop an interest as they grow older.
I do think it's important that everyone knows how to cook a simple meal before they're ready to get out on their own. It's a shame that some brides know nothing except how to open cans or order out for meals.

To be honest I have 4 kids and I have been teaching them to make a few basic things since they were about 5. They can make toast, and hot cereal, and when my son is arround who is 12 he helps the girls make mac & cheese. I think it is very important for kids to learn to cook. You never know when they are going to need to help you when you get really sick.
