Do you go grocery shopping on an empty stomach?

I heard that if you shop for groceries on an empty stomach you will end up buying alot of sweets and snacks. I experimented on a full stomach and was probably too full cos I ended up deciding not to buy a thing and left the store empty-handed.

It's definitely true. Everything sounds good when you are hungry. I think you could save a lot of money going the route you did!

I have learned not to go when I am hungry , my cart looks like I have pms from hell when I get hungry and go shopping so I have decided it's a big no no lol . Besides I waste more money on crap stuff rather then getting things I can use for meals .

It is true if you go shopping on an empty stomach you will end up buying more then what you planned to. Always eat before you go grocery shopping.

Hi there! That's a funny result for your experiment. :D I have never observed that. I usually do, I think because I prefer to eat after doing everything that I have to do in the mall. Maybe I'll try that out the next time that I shop for groceries. Thank you very much for sharing that.

Try it and see, I am not exaggerating when I say I develop cravings amongst the supermarket aisles.

i've tried doing groceries on an empty stomach too and i ended up with a lot of stuffs that i don't really need. after that, i really eat first and make sure im not hungry before hitting the groceries. that way i can think rationally and weigh my options as to the need of the stuff. if don't really need it then i don't have to buy it. maybe when hungry i tend to rush too so i could finish soon and get my dinner.

That's one way that may work, but when I am too hungry, I may end up walking out of the store without purchasing anything cos my mind would be on getting food.

For me it depends upon how much money I have. When I Don't have a Lot of Money I have gone on an empty stomach, but if I don't have much money on me I don't really have much too spend. I don't use credit cards so it is not usually an issue. When I do have a Lot of Money I do buy more snacks and sweets, however, I usually have a tendency to use the money to purchase higher-quality meals. Sometimes I will slurge on meat, exotic sea food, or other items I would not ordinarily afford to buy. If I am truly hungry, and not just having a craving, I usually desire a more well-balanced, rich meal.

That makes perfect sense. For me, if I can afford to splurge, the snacks I got would be more pricey, if money is tight then perhaps just a cheap candy bar.

This study I have never known so I have never done this. May be it is the psychological aspect. The empty stomach and full stomach study go hand in hand. Its true when we crave for some food, we buy the food.

Many times hungry people end up buying snacks and seems to have difficulties stopping at just one bag.

I usually go to the grocery on weekends. That would be shopping for the stuff I need for the entire week. I usually have a list of the things I would need for the whole week. Most of the time, I go on an empty stomach. Yes, I crave to buy a lot of stuff that would go way beyond my budget! So, the best thing I would do is to keep away from those lanes that have a lot of food and junk food that really look inviting to my eyes! I try to keep my attention on my list of things to buy so I don't end up spending more than I really intended to.

These days supermarketeers are clever! They have junk food displayed at every corner, and with every turn of the head I'll go "hmm I think I need that!" hahaha....

Very true! On days that I'm running errands in town, my husband and I will often stop for lunch at a large buffet restaurant chain. We do our shopping when we're done, and I often find I don't buy half the things I needed, only because they didn't really appeal to me at the time. If you're hungry, you're more prone to impulse buying convenience foods and snacks.

I totally agree! Sometimes I may enter a store just wanting to buy a pack of batteries and came out carrying a bag full of snacks.
