What's the deal on being paid to advertise? Is it for real?

I have read on several occasions that there are certain businesses that pay you to advertise their services. Is this true? I read that someone was advertising for cell phone company and received free stuff. Is this on the up and up? Do you have to give credit card information? Has anyone else heard of this? If so, please explain. Thanks
