Computer should not be for games

Isn't kind of wierd that when you walk into best buy and ask for help with purchasing a computer, the first question they ask you in "do you play computer games"? I find that irritating because it's a technology abuse. I mean why would someone want to buy a computer to play games if they can always buy a play station or an X-box. Besides, computers are far more expensive if you plan to play games. Does anyone think that it's a little ridiculus to pay $1000 to buy a computer to play games while you can pay a lot less to buy a play station and a computer?

as a gamer point of view. i think they ask that question because if you need it for games then they will give you a higher specs for your gaming needs and if not then they will just give you a typical specs.
and i think playing games in pc is much more fun especially if your used in MMORPG. unlike other consoles its kinda get boring easily since you only play alone or limited players can play on it. or if ever you do have network capabilities in a console you can only play with someone who have the same console that you have. and there's a lot of games you can play with pc. you can even play games from other consoles(emulator) from your pc like. gameboy, Playstation, NES, SNES, Sega, etc.
in our country we prefer PC games (mostly online game like MMORPG) rather than other game consoles.
to put it short,a PC design for games is more flexible than any other game console.

Here you have right. Computer was made only for bussines and personal purpose. To help people from works to talk each other and make the chating more fast & fun. But the computer is a quite boring without games. Imagine you in a boring day staying at computer and just watching ... and when a couple of minutes are gone .. you are sayin` in your mind : I want to play a game but I Dont have one . So .. the computer is allowed to all things. But why to buy an PC & an xbox/playstation? When you can have both only on PC!

While you are right that the computer was made for personal use, the PC actually was popular because of PC gaming. That shows that people even back in the 80's were more interested in playing games on their computer than office stuff.
If all games were made for the computer, less people would buy consoles because it's more efficient to buy an expensive computer that is great than to buy a crappy (but they make it sound good) computer as well as a console.
Too bad people aren't informed enough about computers to know that.

I have a few friends that are addicted to playing games on their computer, and they will happily pay hundreds of pounds to upgrade their computer to the latest graphics card. I personally find no interest in computer games at all. I use my computer for a vast number of diverse tasks, but playing games is certainly not one of them.

Actually, it's funny that you say that.
Computers were originally popular because of PC gaming. Without it, they wouldn't have sold as well. Why? Because PC's can go faster, and deliver better graphics than consoles.
I know nowadays it seems like that isn't true.
However it is. The only difference is the regular consumer is scammed.
A 1000$ computer is good-ish, but a 1500$+ computer is what you'd buy for the latest hardware. HP,Acer, many of those companies feature powerful computers when it comes to RAM, Hardrive, and processors..but everything else (aka, the stuff a non-geek wouldn't know about) sucks. Because of that, a computer that is supposed to be uber fast is only regular fast. That is why they sell cheaply.
Then you have the console people. A console is nothing more than a computer but without your choice of software. However, people sometimes do put windows/linux/mac on their consoles (for fun), why? because they're computers! Consoles only sell cheaply because the company will earn back the money from console-producing rights. That's right. People who make games pay a fee to produce on a console.
The real question is: Why do we buy both computers AND consoles when we could just have a computer BE our console?
You're probably going to go out and buy a 1000$ computer, plus tax, then a printer, then some more stuff to go with it. That's probably 1300$ total. Then you buy a console , which is nothing more than a computer, for 300$?
With that kind of money you could buy yourself a REAL computer, one that does both "normal" and gaming stuff.
(and actually if you made the computer yourself, a GREAT computer can easily be 1400$, thus saving you money).
Why don't people do that? Because they've been conned. And now that we have more people specifically producing games for consoles, and less for PC, there is no way to revert this.

Right, i see where you are coming from, but how often do you purchase computers? maybe once a year, MAX, so someone asking you a small question once a year, isnt really going to kill you! But i see what you mean, i have been asked it everytime i have bought one! But i supose thats what a lot of people still use them for =]

I disagree. A gaming computer can do a host of things a non-gaming computer can not do. That is find if you are just using Outlook or writing documents. If you want to edit photos or modify movies, then you are out of luck with a good graphics card that can handle such. Plus, there are better games for PC than console and that console is going to cost you 2-3 times as much int he long run. Also, most people who are buying PC have kids and those kids play PC games....logical question

The graphics on some games is far better on some computers than they are on a playstation or Xbox or anything else. Plus they want to sell you the right computer with the right memory, graphics and other things needed in the computer to play certain games. I use my computer mainly for internet use, paying bills, photos, music and other things. I have some games but not many. I would not buy a computer just to play games.

Umm.. actually I disagree.
Honestly, I beg to differ. There is nothing wrong with playing computer games and when you compare computer games with xbox or playstation ones, the last 2 just don't cut in more ways than 1.
I rather play computer games than the other 2 any day. Further, you can play games and multi-task if you are on the computer. If you are on xbox and playstation, you can only play games and you might just be hogging the family TV.:P
There is a reason why the salesperson asked if you are playing computer games - the hardware. Some games require more powerful video card and more ram so the price and specifications will be different.
He can instead ask you if you edit photos and videos or draw on the computer intensively. But compared to those who do gaming, this number is lower. And so, it makes more sense for one to ask if you play games.:P

To be completely honest with you, I use my pc to play my games. I think it is a waste of money buying Play Stations and Xbox when new versions of those will come out like the Xbox 360 and PS3 and then they will eventually stop making games for the older platforms. However, game companies never ever stop making games for the PC platforms, so in the long run, instead of buying a new game system, all I have to do is upgrade my PC with a new RAM card and an external hard drive. Plus, PC games are sometimes $10 to $20 cheaper than the games for other platforms, let's say for the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, etc...

Perhaps you look young so that they ask you such kind of question:) Seriously, computer can do a lot of things, including playing the games. If you have a nice computer, you don't have to buy a play station and X-box. Besides playing computer games, you can still use the computer to surf, editing photos, writing etc.

A lot of people do buy their computer to play games. If I have to make a list of priorities for using the computer, from what I've encountered, it would be something like this:
1. Play games.
2. Watch movies.
3. Listen to music.
4. Do some work.
I work as a computer retailer, and I've seen many days where kids (mostly college kids) bring their computer to the store and ask, "Why is 'some game' not running fast enough on my PC"?
Can't really blame them, though. PCs are much better than consoles when it comes to gaming. Yes, the newest gaming console are great, but after 3 months from their release, PC users get access to hardware even better than the ones in gaming consoles. We've seen it with the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360. They were great when they were released, but now they don't stand a chance if compared to PCs. Not to mention that PCs are also much more flexible. You can't upgrade your PlayStation or Xbox. You also can't do some work on them... So for most people, PCs are really the best choice, as they provide you with an all-in-1 solution.

you say this because you don't know that there are meny meny games that are only with pc and are very beautiful! do you know starcraft, baldur's gate age of empire??
a potent and expensive pc also can use for many other thing, like music, internet, programmation that with a simple console you cannot

I don't play computer games for many reasons
1. Very time consuming
2. I find it useless
3. Not my style , i rather try making a buck then spending a buck.
I know many people who play computer games all the time , they also have xbox , playstation... exc..
Computer games are a little different you use the mouse and keyboard instead of using a controller. Computer are multitasking machines , unlike xbox.

I agree with you, why would anyone pay that much money just to use the computer for games?
Plus, I can't stand Best Buy. You are lucky you had someone approach you, I went in one time seriously ready to buy a computer and couldn't get anyone to wait on me. Their loss and Staples gain.

I agree to an extent. Because i'd still want everything to be in my computer, games & work..lol But if the reason why my computer becomes "ridiculously" expensive is because of its "gaming", then I'd most definitely disagree.
I walked into a computer shop myself and like you the person tried to sell me on a computer based on a "gaming" specs. And that it contained "all hyper-stuff" to take all the newest games. Oh my. But then again, I guess it all boils down to what you need it for.
I just wish to God that they speed this things up not because we can play games but so that we can a lot of work done.

They are sales people, from what I've learned in sales jobs you do this pyramid process...
Ask questions to narrow down what the person wants, start w/ the machine that does the most. A conversation would go like this:
Customer: I want to buy a computer
Salesperson: Do you want one that plays games (typically the $$ ones w/ the best graphics)
Customer: No, I'm looking for something to prepare my family budget and surf the net.
Salesperson: Will you be using it for a home business? (thinking of $ model that offers more pre-installed professional software, memory and big hard drive)
Customer: No, I am using it for family purposes
Salesperson: Will you be editing family photograhs? (thinking of model that has lots of memory and good monitor)
Customer: Yes, I will be using this for family photos
Salesperson: Okay, based on your needs, we have model A for $750 comes with /photo software/works and a trial version of MS office. We also have model B for $550 comes with works and trial version of office and standard MS paint.
Customer: Okay, I think I will go with model B and buy my own software
Salesperson: Great! Can I interest you in an extended purchase plan? (bwahhaha...)
Customer: How much does it cost?
Salesperson: $550
It's all a training thing, so as annoying as it is, this is what the trainers at stores will tell their sales people to best "Help" the customer.
Personally, I like them to leave me a lone and let me pick what my own research has led to ;)

because there are some games that are exclusive to the pc like civilization and such.
