The Book, A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle--In My Opinion a Must Read

For anyone who is "searching" for themselves, wants to better themselves and have new meaning and a transformation in their lives, I highly recommend the book "A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle. This is the very same book that, that wonderful woman who I "met" on the Oprah.com message boards who without asking anything in return sent me a copy free (You can see this amazing act of generosity in my discussion about "It Sometimes Really Amazes Me: The Kindness of People") Well I got the book just yesterday and started reading it and I can see what all the hubbub is all about.
I've only read the first Chapter...now I understand where the author is "at" and what he is saying, it is a rather "deep" book and many just might not "get" it. I'm used to reading "heavy" stuff so I'm not having any problem with it...LOL
Now admittedly this book won't be everyone's cup of tea...I also belong to the Oprah messages boards and of course there are discussions there about the book, and my oh my, the majority of people are in an uproar and bashing it to pieces, particularly those of many of the Christian faith...especially those who take the Bible as absolute truth...the ones who don't believe in reincarnation, or don't believe that animals have souls and of course those who believe that only those who follow "their" beliefs will go to heaven.
Basically what Tolle says in his first chapter are things that I've come to the conclusion to many, many years ago...that because the Bible has been translated so many times in so many different languages that the original meanings have been lost, and also as I had pointed out in one of my other discussions in questioning the literal truths of the Bible, that much of what was originally written in the Bible was deleted by the Church. He points out how the original teachings of not only Christ, but ANY spiritual avatar, even Buddha have been twisted and misinterpreted. For instance, he goes into the concept of the REAL meaning of original sin...it's NOT the way the Christian church teaches it...that "sin" in the original Greek, means to miss the mark.."So to sin means to miss the point of human existence" (page 9-ANE) this is a far cry what Christianity teaches as original sin.
I think one of the key messages I got from the first chapter is in essence the whole idea that if we don't learn from the past, we are condemned to repeat it...isn't this true? We know history, we know of the genocide the human species has done in the past...yet have we learned from the past? Aren't we STILL doing that? And not only to the people of the earth, but the earth itself and of all the living creatures on it.
Here's an excerpt that stood out like wildfire to me:"We only need to watch the daily news on television to realize that the madness has not abated, that it is continuing into the twenty-first century. Another aspect of the collective dysfunction of the human mid is the unprecedented violence that humans are inflicting on other life-forms and the planet itself--the destruction of oxygen-producing forests...ill-treatment of animals in factory farms...Driven by greed, ignorant of their connectedness to the whole, humans persist in behavior that,if continued ...can only result in their own destruction..." (page 11-ANE, Tolle)
No this book won't be everyone's cup of tea...not everyone will "get" it, or understand it and it does shatter perhaps many people's religious beliefs particularly those raised a certain way and aren't opened minded enough to accept other "truths" or philosophies that are different from their own. I do, however, highly recommend it to anyone who is still in an ongoing search for understanding who we are...to maybe gain some insight to that perpetual question, "Why am I here?"Like I said I only read the first chapter and love this book already!

I grew up reading the bible since I was nine years old after finding it in our basement and feel like I have wanted to know more since I was a kid and it was a urge that never went away and with TOLLE's book it just feels like coming full circle, maybe not in the near future but certain in the future. I long for the evolution of man and the release from form to only spirit and feel like that is my reason for needing these answers. One thing I noticed is that as long as I asked questions, even internally, they always came and even though not immediately alot of time, it never felt like it was too late but just the right timing. I am curious if there is any significance to the-----------------RAPTURE--------------------------------
which is spoken of in the bible, and I wonder if this has anything to do with the new evolution of man, im excited and do not see it as a religious occurence but only natural as all humans long for this and Echkart said in discussion that man evolves when their is crisis for it and certainly thats why more and more people are becoming aware so much in recent times.

Hello black cat, this book sounds interesting and already, I'm looking forward to reading it. I only hope that the book is available here in my country.
I welcome any kind of self-improvement or re-awakening type of books as I believe this can give us a better perspectives in life.
It saddened me to think that there are many Christians out there who are exemplifying their ugly sides. They should stop being dense and start opening their minds wider. By reading this kind of book, it doesn't mean we are straying away from our religious beliefs.
We are all born with wisdom of our own and we can use it to weigh things whether what we are reading can have a greater impact or better our lives or not.

Yes, I remember you've read The Secret too, right...my have a good memory don't I? Hehe Yes, I wish some of the more fundamental Christian believers would open up their minds more, I don't think they realize what they are missing out on by not opening their minds to other ideas

reading your summary makes me believe that the book is good. i also believe that the bible is translated in so many ways for any man to understand, the best teacher of the bible i life itself and sin teaches us to hit our life's target. yes, true it will not be very popular who has a different paradigm on life specially the hard core christians who are very religious. Being spiritual sets people on a higher plane of existence, it makes us open our minds to everything around us.

I think the best teacher of life IS life itself, no matter what dogma of religion one adheres to, and yes I do recommend this book...maybe since I have studied so many spiritual paths and philosophies I do understand where he's "at"

In oprahs first 'class' (on her website) they discussed this and how life is filled with many hidden gems that offer insight in our lives that lead us closer to this new awakening. I think Oprah is excellent with these classes because she is genuinely interested in his book and gotta love that skype, Im trying to see if my Borders is hosting a session with Oprah.

Hello again...didn't receive a reply from my second e-mail...did you receive it? If not let me know and I will resend it.
Anyway, glad to see you encouraging others to read this book. I have not read it yet...but have been discussing it with friends who have. I think it is a great thing that Oprah keeps bringing 'our' spiritual views into mainstream venues. Hopefully with Oprah beating the drum on a more trans-personal approach to growing our souls we will eventually have greater unity and less polarized thinking about the 'right and wrong' pathways to enlightenment.
Good discussion...will look forward to hearing how others respond. Hope your feet are doing better...my thoughts are with you.

Sorry about not replying...I did get your second email...I'm a bit backlogged with all my emails as I've been doing a lot of my photography work...I do love doing it but can be a bit tiring on the eyes especially the retouching part...when I used to do retouching on prints it was just as fatiguing to the eyes...so wasn't too fond of retouching the old fashioned way with a small itsy paintbrush...LOL Instead of a paintbrush though now it's the mouse cursor--so will answer as soon as possible
Oprah was also responsible for bringing people's attention to The Secret as well, and this book now seems to be as big as that and just as life transforming..so really getting into it..unfortunately for those who are closed minded or skeptical and perhaps maybe very new souls, they won't accept the principles of this book..I think those of us who have had many years of spiritual journeys will understand this book better--look at the ridicule Shirley MacClaine received when she freely discussed her beliefs with Out On A Limb..I admired her as an actress to begin with and admired her all the more for her candor..she was ahead of her time in telling of her beliefs, remember that book was written in the early 1980s..now many of her ideas she brought forth are more readily accepted...then again, as with Tolle's book many still aren't

Hi...thanks for replying and explaining. No problem...I know what it is like to receive a whack of e-mails that require longer responses. We do the best we can...and hopefully others understand. I wasn't asking to pressure you for a response...but I have had things go missing and when time is spent in writing them I just like to know they arrived.
I agree with you about Out on A Limb. I recall the interview she did on I think 60 Minutes. She was courageous and yes, ahead of her time for sure. However, all great thinkers usually are. Hopefully this book will push the boundaries of mainstream thinking a little more. Every little bit helps.

I will check out this book on your glowing recommendation, pyewacket. I believe that it's a good thing to expand our minds whenever the opportunity presents itself, however, I know that long-held beliefs are not so easily cast aside. I try to keep an open mind about most all things in my quest to better understand myself and the world I am living in. As you stated, the book will not be for everyone, but there just might be some whose consciousness will benefit from reading it.

What is interesting about Eckhart Tolle as now I've been reading up on him is that he suffered many years of serious depression before he became "enlightened"...sometimes it takes a hardship to understand and realize some truths in life, no?

You really get into your books. That's a good thing. I think you really have to try to understand and involve yourself in the story otherwise you lose interest before the end. I have never read these type of self awakening books before, i dont browse books mucha nd have most of mine from the internet that have been recommened byt different people clubs. I hope you like it keep us informed when you are a little further into the book.
But never spoil the ending! EVER.

Besides the fiction books I read (and often children's ones at that) I read a lot of self-improvement type books...like the Secret, The Science of Getting Rich (hey we ALL want that..LOL), The Attractor Factor...So many of these kinds of books have helped me to really get down and do some goal-setting to be able to reach my ambitions in life

I read A New Earth and loved it. I am in the process of reading it a second time through and am getting even more from it. One of my favorite quotes from the book is: "Let go of 'the story' and return to the only place of power: the present moment." I am reminded of the stories I tell my ownself through thought and have become much more aware that these stories I tell myself are powerful in their ability to change my 'reality.'
Another great quote: "The survival of illusion depends upon one mistaking it for reality." -Tolle
That Eckhart Tolle...now he is one smart cookie, yes?
Fantastic discussion topic.

Glad to see another Tolle fan. Did you get a chance to see the webcasts on the Oprah.com website back in March...one can still see them anytime you know either by watching them on her website, or by downloading them free from iTunes.
Yes, too many people are wrapped up in their "story"...yes, sometimes I might be guilty of it, but some people make a living out of it and never realize they are "stuck" ...by doing that one never moves on...maybe they are afraid to as it's so much easier to be stuck in the familiar...was just reading words like that to a similar effect by Louise Hay's You Can Heal Yourself book and she wrote that long before Tolle's

Nope there are no accidents in life. Over at the Oprah.com website if you go to the book forum discussions, all of Oprah's favorite recommended books can be discussed there...there is a larger section just devoted to A New Earth and you can discuss to your heart's content with fellow Tolle's enthusiast --maybe I'll catch you there...my user name is similar...pyewackete

Hi PYE~
No, I did not see the webcasts of "A New Earth." However, it has certainly been brought to my attention a number of times. Gee...I wonder if this is a sign that I oughtta actually log in and be fed, huh? I think the "new awakening" (buzz words abound), has pulled me into a new attention zone of improved "non resistance."
I mention that in this response because I am working at "allowing"...allowing the mention of a book, or a class, or a documentary, or an invitation to administer to the needs of another, as a directional signal for pursuing my "life purpose" rightly.
Simplified: After I end this post, I my INTENTION is to go directly to the "New Earth" webcast and figure out how to review it.
Evidence further that...there are no accidents in life...for...everything happens for a reason, including this conversation.
Thanks, PYE.
